Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Move" by Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce Knowles seem to be addressing a toxic relationship. The singer is telling their partner to "move right out of my life" because they're "tearing [their heart] apart." The partner is described as having "magnetic power" that's holding the singer down, making them feel "just like a flower" stuck in the ground. They're also described as "horribly Satanic" for leading the singer around and causing them to feel like the Titanic, always sinking down.

The chorus repeats throughout the song, emphasizing the singer's desire for their partner to leave. They suggest that their partner take everything and just "move right outta my life." The song ends with the Dreamettes, the group the two singers are portraying in the movie "Dreamgirls," hyping up the crowd before a talent contest winner is announced.

Overall, the lyrics seem to be about a relationship that's doing more harm than good. The partner is tearing the singer apart and causing them to feel trapped, and the singer wants them to leave so they can breathe and escape the pain.

I have heard so many great renditions of this song, but Jennifer Holiday is the blueprint! She sung and acted with her whole entire everything, and in 2020 it still brings me to tears.....just MASTERFUL!!!

@Percussiongurl

It’s a master class. Range, style, breathe control, emotion I could go on.

@GenaGilder

Jennifer Hudson did the the damn thang, but there’s nothing like seeing the original. ❤

@carolynfinkelmeier1227

And to think she did this 10 times a week for years !!!!!!!

@bradleyscarton3931

Broadway does 8 shows a week, not 10. And yes, in the beginning Jennifer did do this 8 shows a week, but within a few months the vocal demands of the role took its toll on her voice and understudies went on a lot for her after she began to blow out her voice. When she went to LA to do the show, she only did the evening shows because it was too much for her vocally to do that many shows. The matinees were done by her understudy, Lillias White, and within a few months Jennifer was blowing out her voice to the point that Lillias was doing just as many shows as her.
