Romans
Jennifer Knapp Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just when I think I've got it it's gone. when I think I know the answer and
I dare to raise my hand it's wrong. Stop. stop. stop this foolish pride of
mine. that dares to drag me far away from you. when I try to do it my way
I always lose. I always lose your point of view. I don't have to be
condemned. Jesus saved me from the laws of sin. If I fall I'll try again. with
the spirit as my guide I'll never have to hide again. I try to close my eyes
like a child playing in a game of hide and seek. If I can not see the Lord
than surely the Lord can not see me. As if I could ever keep him from
spying me. All the plans of this man they're nothing more than evil

schemes. (chorus).

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jennifer Knapp's "Romans" are a reflection of the human struggle with pride and the righteousness that comes from following God's laws. The verse opens with the singer admitting to being misguided in thinking that they have a grasp on things when in reality, their understanding eludes them. The feeling of inadequacy is expressed through the phrase "it's wrong," which implies that the singer's intuition is lacking. In the next line, they call out to stop this foolish pride that has taken them away from God, leading them to lose sight of their true purpose. The singer learns the lesson that trying to take matters into their own hands ("my way") leads to failure and alienation from God.

The next section of the verse acknowledges that the individual does not have to live under condemnation because Jesus has saved them from the laws of sin. The singer recognizes that they can fall but assures themselves they will resume their pursuit of God's will with the spirit as their guide. This confidence in the guidance of the Holy Spirit is an instrument in liberating the singer from hiding, enabling them to live openly and fully in Christ's love. The verse ends with a metaphor of a child in a game of hide-and-seek, who thinks that by closing their eyes, they can not be seen while all the time God is watching them. The lyrics reveal how plans that come from human schemes are useless without God.
