Another sideways glance
I thought that love could be real
I thought of taking a chance
I didn't talk to you
And oh I turned away
I can't be love could be through
That we'd throw it away
And if you didn't really want
How come
It's your memory that haunts me
You - are not alone
No matter where - where you go
And if you leave here - leave in the morning light
And in the day - you will see clearly
Then I was walking through
The park the other day
I thought of all of the things
I'd forgotten to say
Will I be taking down
The story of my life
Appalled at all of the words
I'd forgotten to write
Like if you didn't really need me
And if you didn't really want
How come (how come)
Well it's your memory that haunts me
You - are not alone
No matter where - where you go
And if you leave me - leave in the morning light
And in the day - you will see clearly
Cause if you didn't really need me
And if you didn't really want
How come? (how come)
Well it's your memory that haunts me
Instead of sentimental long nights
Let's come together with the lights on
The sun (the sun)
Light on my bed will know where I've gone
In "Story of My Life," Jennifer Lopez explores the rocky road of a failing relationship, and how her own perception of the situation may be clouding her judgement. The opening lines set the tone for the song, as JLo sings about the emptiness she feels from the relationship, which is further compounded by her own resistance to see things as they really are. The chorus reflects her conflict, as she breaks her own rules by staying in a situation that's not working, and falling for someone who doesn't feel right.
As the song progresses, JLo acknowledges how she's been defending the relationship, and how she thought it could lead to a happy ending. However, she realizes that perhaps she's been too blinded by her own desire for a fairy tale ending, and that it's time to let go. In the bridge, she pleads with her partner to listen to her, revealing her stubbornness and vulnerability. Despite this, in the end, she resigns herself to keep walking, as the story of her life continues.
