Heart Wars
Jennifer Rush Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We're just two people fighting like nations
Is this the state of all human relations
Words are like weapons, take aim and fire
Love loses reason in the name of desire

Heart wars I surrender
Let's let some sunshine steal all the thunder
We better change 'cause it's breaking us under
Heart wars I surrender to love

How can two people call themselves lovers
Giving and taking abuse from each other
This situation needs rearranging
How can we love when we waste ourselves waging

Heart wars I surrender
Let's let some sunshine steal all the thunder
We better change 'cause it's breaking us under
Heart wars I surrender to love
Heart wars I surrender to love
Heart wars I surrender to love

We stand alone with our pride as protection
We gotta find a different direction
Reach past our minds and end this destruction
Are we the world or the world our reflection

Heart wars I surrender
Let's let some sunshine steal all the thunder
We better change 'cause it's breaking us under
Heart wars I surrender to love

Heart wars I surrender to love
Heart wars I surrender to love

Why wasn't this a hit in America like Flames of Paradise? I feel like she should have been big here too!

Because sadly, the American music market is the most fickle in the world.

I “missed” Jennifer in her prime—in fact, I only discovered her 2 months ago. I am a big fan of Celine and only discovered Jennifer because I came across Celine’s cover of POL including Jennifer. I couldn’t believe my ears.
I’m 84 and have heard them all, from Ginger Rogers to Edith Piaf to Vera Lynn. Then Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Barbara Streisand, Dusty Springfield, Tammy Wynette, and Bonnie Tyler. Add Gloria Gaynor, Connie Francis, Laura Branigan, Linda Ronstadt, Rita Coolidge, Celine, Mariah, and Whitney and you have the lineup of the greats right up to Adele and Susan Boyle.
But, Jennifer Rush has the all-around best female voice I have ever heard. Her operatic training adds an unmatched vibrato containing depth and texture. And she sings everything: opera, pop, rock, and ballads in English, Spanish, German, and Hungarian.
She also studied piano and violin at Juilliard. She has written or co-written the lyrics and music for many of her songs, done duets with Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras, Elton John, and Brian May—sorry—Sir Brian May, Michael Bolton, and performed live all over the world—but not in America, except in March and April 1986 on the Carson show and the Dick Clark Show; that’s it.
Why is she the best? Effortless high range: (look at Celine’s cover with Jennifer singing “Power of Love” to see the ease with which Jennifer handles the highest notes.) Listen to “Who Wants to Live Forever” (with or without Brian—Sir Brian—May) as well as “Stronghold”, “Another Way”, “Hero of a Fool”, “I come Undone” and many more.
With her operatic training (her father, Maurice Stern (Mauro Lampi) and step-mother Rita Loving) she developed a superior vibrato, appropriate body language, and perfect interpretation, and because she wrote or co-wrote most of her songs, she injects them with a personal load of musical endorphins that hit your ears and your heart at the same time.
Yes. If Jennifer had decided to live her life in the US, she would still be in Las Vegas or on tour.
