Go Ahead
Jennifer Trynin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yeah yeah yeah

I'll just have one more cigerette
Before I get myself to bed
And though it's killing me I know
I got nowhere else to go

I grab a needle and a ledge
But I don't want to hurt my head
I know I love you or so you said

Go Ahead, I won't be too far behind
Kill the lights and I will try to keep
My mind on you and my body in this bed

I'll have just one last look at
'Cause it's the best that I can do
Don't you dare look me in the eye
'Cause that's when I start to lie

I'd grab a bottle and a shed
Then we go do it in a hedge
I know I love you or so you said.

Go Ahead, I won't be too far behind
Kill the lights and I will try to keep
My mind on you and my body in this bed

Yeah
Yeah

Ah, Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Ah, yeah yeah yeah yeah

Go Ahead Go ahead
Go Ahead Go Ahead

Ah, yeah yeah Yeah Yeah

Go Ahead, I won't be too far behind
Kill the lights and I will try to keep
My mind on you and my body in this bed

Go Ahead, I won't be too far behind
Kill the lights and I will try to keep
My mind on you and my body in this bed

Go ahead
Go ahead

Yeah

Yeah
Yeah

Overall Meaning

In "Go ahead," Jennifer Trynin paints a vivid picture of a restless, self-destructive night spent desperately trying to fend off loneliness. The singer is smoking one last cigarette before retiring for the night, hoping that sleep will bring relief from the loneliness that gnaws at them. However, their mind is kept churning by desperation and that sense of nowhere else to go.

The singer is trying to hold onto their love for another person ("I know I love you, or so you said"), but it is apparent that the love is not enough to fill the void of loneliness. The desperation builds, and the singer fantasizes about using drugs and alcohol to numb their pain and escape.

The chorus, "Go ahead, I won't be too far behind," serves as a reference to the idea that one will follow another, even down a path of self-destruction. The tragedy of the song lies in the destructive behavior born out of vulnerability, loneliness, and despair. The singer is willing to do whatever it takes to forget about their loneliness, even if it means putting themselves in harm's way.
