Somewhere Somebody
Jennifer Warnes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Must be a million boys living in this great big city
I know that one of them is just right for me
I've looked uptown, downtown, all around searchin'
I know he's out there waiting for me

I know somewhere, somebody, lookin', longin'
Somewhere, somebody, waitin' for me
Somewhere, somebody, searchin', prayin'
Tell me where in the world

You know street lights shine in passin' faces
I'm just tryin' to catch somebody's eye
But all the shoulda been's, the woulda been's, the mighta been's and the coulda been's
Slippin' away and just walk right on by

Somewhere, somebody, lookin', longin'
Somewhere, somebody, waitin' for me
Somewhere, somebody, searchin', prayin'
Tell me where in the world

I walk in the rain that's fallin'
A voice in the distance callin', why
I run to the empty doorway waitin' for the sun to shine
When will love be mine

I know that somewhere, somebody, lookin', longin'
Somewhere, somebody, waitin' for me
Somewhere, somebody, searchin', prayin'
Tell me where in the world

Must be a million boys living in this great big city
I know you're out there waiting for me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jennifer Warnes's song Somewhere Somebody speaks about the all-consuming search for that one true love. She starts by acknowledging the reality that in a city as big as hers, there must be a million boys, but she is on the lookout for that one boy who is just right for her. She has looked uptown, downtown, and all around, searching for that person who is waiting for her. She believes that there is somebody out there who is looking, longing, waiting, searching, and praying for her. Someone who will recognize her for who she is, and not just walk by her like all the shoulda been’s, woulda been’s, mighta been’s, and coulda been’s.

The chorus of the song repeats the idea that there is someone out there searching for her. She is trying to catch somebody's eye amidst the many faces that pass by on the street. However, she believes that those potential relationships she dreams of, keep slipping away. Later in the song, she is shown walking in the rain, listening to the voice in the distance calling, hoping that love will soon be hers. She is waiting for the sun to shine, believing that love will be hers someday because she knows that somewhere, somebody is waiting for her.
