Piece Of My Heart
Jenny Morris Lyrics

Come on come on
Come on come on
Didn't I make you feel
You were the only man
Mmmm and didn't I give you everything
That a woman possibly can
You know I did
Each time I tell myself
That I think I've had enough
I'm gonna show you
A woman can be tough

[Chorus]
I want you to come on come on
Come on come on hey (take it)
Take another little piece of my heart now baby (break it)
Break another little piece of my heart now baby (have a)
Have another little piece of my heart now baby
You know you've got it
If it makes you feel good

You're out on the street looking good
Deep down in your heart
I guess you know it just ain't right
Now you can hear me when you cry
I cry all the time
Each time I tell myself that I can't stand the pain
But when you hold me in your arms
And I feel it once again

[Chorus]

You know you've got it
If it makes you feel good
If it makes you feel
you're out on the street
And deep down in your heart I guess
You know it just ain't right
Yeah yeah yeah

[Chorus]

You know you've got it yeah
You know you've got it
Take another little piece of my heart now baby
you've got to break another piece
Break another piece break another piece
Of my heart again
You know you've got it

You know you've got it
If it makes you feel good

Overall Meaning

Jenny Morris’s “Piece of My Heart” is a song about a woman who has given everything to make her man happy. She starts by reminding him that she made him feel like he was the only man in the world and gave him everything she possibly could as a woman. However, she also admits to struggling with the pain that comes with putting all of herself into a relationship. Every time she tells herself that she has had enough, she shows him that a woman can be tough instead.

The lyrics show that the woman is aware that the man is not faithful to her and she is left crying all the time. She knows that it is not right for her to stay with him and, while she tries to convince herself that she can't stand the pain, she keeps going back to him because of the way he makes her feel when he holds her. The chorus repeats the request for him to take another little piece of her heart, even though he has broken it many times before. The song is about the complex emotions that come with giving everything to a relationship, knowing that it might not be reciprocated but still wanting to hold on to the moments that make it all feel worth it.

I had the great pleasure of randomly sitting next to Jenny Morris on a flight from Canberra to Sydney in the mid 90's. She was wonderful to speak to and made me feel important with her genuine interest in what I was saying about my very ordinary life. She is a star performer and a star person.
