Thought to have been born in London in 1674, Clarke was a pupil of John Blow at St Paul's Cathedral. He later became organist at the Chapel Royal. "A violent and hopeless passion for a very beautiful lady of a rank superior to his own" caused him to commit suicide by shooting himself. He was succeeded in his post by William Croft.

Clarke is now best remembered for the popular keyboard piece attributed to him, the "Prince of Denmark's March", commonly called the Trumpet Voluntary and attributed for a long time to Henry Purcell. The piece is actually taken from the semi-opera The Island Princess, a joint musical production of Clarke and Daniel Purcell (Henry Purcell's younger brother), which is probably the reason for the confusion.

This was signature tune for news sent from London to Denmark during World War Two. It was a mix of real news, propaganda, misleading information to the germans and coded messages for the Danish Resistance. It's very special for my generation and it actually made me wish a trumpet for my 8 years birthday. Have played it ever since.

I feel like this is a tune where some serious reverb is essential. This performance has that quality in spades, plus the trumpeting sounds really 'bright' - where the high end frequencies are really blasted out, in my opinion another essential quality to performing this tune to its full potential. This is the 'best and brightest' performance I've yet heard. Awesome !

This glorious piece of music has been a favourite of mine since I first heard it played on the organ by my Uncle in St Peters Church, Bury St Edmunds in around 1955. Each time my Uncle Leslie (Dick) as he was known, visited his brother and my Dad at our home there after, I would beg him to play the tune for me on our upright piano, he always obliged bless him.

This was my wedding march in 1985. I, and another bride-elect, met with the church organist, and of course we wanted the traditional "Here Comes The Bride" - then the organist reminded us that this was Princess Diana's wedding march- we both said, "Okay"!. Don't know about the other bride-elect, but my marriage is 35 years strong. I feel very special to have had this piece of music at my wedding.

I played this, at Harpenden Public Hall - a solo piece. It is so difficult, getting the trilling right. My parents and neighbours never complained even though I had to get the trilling thing. I used to lie on my bed, and put the trumpet to my mouth and I just loved the sounds that it made, not by me, I hasten to add, but by the trumpet itself. How very gorgeous! Then I got a mute, which changed the sound completely and I fell in love with that particular sound. And then I used to lie on my bed, playing muted trumpet ... My parents, lol xx bless them, in trying to encourage me and keep me silent at the same time, were probably at loggerheads.My Dad said that he knew, that I had joined the Bras Band at school, when the Euphonium walked in the back door ...lol xx it has gone on, from there xx Saxophone is next xx

This was suggested to me by the church organist and I loved it. In 1963 it was still attributed to Purcell and in the 80's I learned about Clarke being the composer. I always suggest it to my refugee friends for their weddings, but they stick to Mendelsohn. (sorry for the wrong spelling).
