Sign
Jeremy Renner Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I said, Lord, won't you save me just one last time
Thought I told ya
I was looking for a sign
Had it once wonder if I would get it twice
Peace of mind only comes in the afterlife
Thought I told ya
(One, two, three)
I need something to believe in
Throw my hands up to the ceiling
Oh sky, won't you give me a sign
Tell me will the world one day ever be mine
Will it ever be mine
Will it ever be mine
Tell me will the world one day ever be mine
I was down on my knees, I was living a lie
I was king of the rubble just wasting time
Thought I told ya
I was looking for a sign
Sick and tired of running circles for miles and miles
Being lost and never really being my style
Thought I told ya
I was looking for a sign
(One, two, three)
I need something to believe in
Throw my hands up to the ceiling
Oh sky, won't you give me a sign
Tell me will the world one day ever be mine
Will it ever be mine
Will it ever be mine
Tell me will the world one day ever be mine
(I didn't want to have to sell my soul
So I took the hard road)
Please won't you show me
A sign...
I need something to believe in
Throw my hands up to the ceiling
Oh sky, won't you give me a sign
Tell me will the world one day ever be mine
I need something to believe in(something to believe in)
Throw my hands up to the ceiling
Oh sky, won't you give me a sign
Tell me will the world one day ever be mine
Will it ever be mine
Will it ever be mine
Tell me will the world one day ever be mine
In Jeremy Renner's "Sign," the lyrics convey a sense of desperation and longing for guidance. The song's protagonist is feeling lost and uncertain about their place in the world, and they're asking for a sign of hope to help them find their way. The first two lines set the scene: the singer is at a river, seemingly at a breaking point. The mention of the Lord implies a religious undertone, but it could also be interpreted as a metaphorical cry for help.
Throughout the song, the singer emphasizes that they're looking for a sign, a symbol that will guide them towards a brighter future. They've experienced peace of mind before, but it has been fleeting, and they're unsure if it will come again. The chorus is the most powerful part of the song, with the repeated plea for a sign from the sky. The singer wants to know if they have a place in the world and if they will ever find peace.
The third verse adds an extra layer to the song, with the singer admitting that they didn't want to "sell their soul" and took the "hard road" instead. This conveys a sense of personal integrity and the desire to find success and happiness through hard work and dedication instead of taking shortcuts or compromising one's values.
Overall, "Sign" is a poignant song that deals with universal themes of self-discovery, longing, and the search for meaning. The repetition of the phrase "I was looking for a sign" emphasizes the desperation and urgency of the singer's quest, and the chorus is a powerful appeal to a higher power to provide guidance and reassurance.

Such a cool and actually uplifting song. Jeremy must have written this ages ago - "will the world ever be mine?" It has been for years and years... I can imagine him writing this, by candlelight in one of those houses they renovated, after not getting some part in a flick.

Okay this is definitely my favorite song so far! It reminds me of New Orleans, musically, and I love the lyrics. And of course, I love Jeremy's voice, but really he could sing just about anything! This is a great song!
