The five-track EP opens with their leading single “you were good to me,” which explores a heart-wrenching break up that left both parties emotionally wrecked. With emotive pianos and sorrowful crooning from Zucker and Cutler, the song is a flawless introduction to "brent".

Chelsea Cutler told PaperMag:

"Jeremy and I stayed in a cabin in Connecticut last year where we wrote our song “better off.” That trip inspired some of our best writing, so we decided to go back a year later."

Jeremy & Chelsea reunited 30 fans in a “secret location” of New York on May 15, 2019, and performed "brent" live for the first time.

Jeremy Zucker added:

"The cabin was basically a recording studio built in an old carriage house. The walls were lined with vintage guitars, keyboards, drums, and loads of random items that we ended up putting in our song. In between writing sessions, we would hike, watch movies, or just talk about life. The music really represents how we felt at that cabin: inspired, wholesome, and introspective."

I’m going through the comments and everybody’s interpretation of the song is different. Some about lost love or some about grief, guilt and sadness.
What I first thought about when I heard this song was as if the lyrics were directed to oneself. Like as if thanking yourself for being strong and at the same time being sorry to yourself for letting oneself go through so much. Nobody hurts you like yourself. And the last lyric “I won’t hurt you anymore” hits me so hard. We all have been in negative mindset where we constantly put ourselves down. But in the end we have to go through that alone. And we manage to overcome it. Our body and minds are so strong. Please remember to be kind to yourself. And thank you Jeremy and Chelsea for such a beautiful song once again.

I guess my interpretation of this song is somewhat simple. A couple broke up but neither of them really wanted to but they were pressured or circumstances made it feel like there was no choice but both of them desperately regret it. They were always good to eachother there was not a specific event where someone was lying, cheating, mean or hateful. It’s sadder when there isn’t a big good reason for the end of a relationship. Yep. Happened to me. We were good to each other and we still loved each other but distance forced us to break up. This is probably the most painful kind of break up because in theory I should still be with the person, but I'm not. The relationship was in a good place. Hope you're okay now, I am in a similar situation as yours, dealing with a narcissistic person. We can't change anything about them, you'll constantly accept them but nothing changes and everything goes back the way it is. One thing is for sure, we both didn't give up:) we gave them hundreds of chances, until we felt nothing, so no regrets at the eng because we tried so hard until we're left with nothing, no self esteem, confidence and just pure broken. A classmate of mine end his life yesterday. To me he was my friend. He is a good person a classroom clown he makes everyone feel alive. It hurts so much knowing he end his life the same way i tried to take mine. I wish I could go back and do something for him or let him know that he is a part of my life and that I treasure all the memories he left me. Rest in peace. Thank you for being a kind person to me when I was being bullied. Thank you for being a part of my life.

This 3 min song literally took me in a full blown “trip down to memory lane”. I remembered those warm and cold moments, when we would run around the school campus, talking about crushes, dreams, goals. I remembered the time I had to let all of you go, I remembered how you smiled at me even when I hid so many things from you, I remembered how mum took my hand and dragged me towards the school gate, I remembered the bittersweet feeling of everything ending so suddenly followed by a completely new beginning.

I've wasted 9 months feeling sorry for myself and pining for a guy who never cared about me in the first place. I am done trying to understand why either of us did what we did. It's over. My childhood best friend and I were so close, the only real best friend i ever had. But we grew apart after starting high school, choosing different courses. Had been years since last talking to her, and I see her on Facebook and social media, so different from the girl I knew. Not necessarily in a bad way. Just not who I used to know. People change, we can't help it, we change too.
Sometimes the time comes to let go of people you love because either one of you or both changed. And you don't have to stop caring about them, but just gotta let them go. Idk you'll hopefully get new people in your life. Might never be the same but times change haha

As for my old best friend,

My husband encountered the Holy Spirit during their devotional prayer and touched his shoulder and said unto him, "GET PEOPLE"... Tears on his eyes started to flow without noticing he is crying already and he open his eyes and try to catch who touched him but no one near him. He thought he is crazy for thinking that weird thing but he asked the Lord to guide him whatever purposes He wanted to my him and he surrendered himself to Jesus. Now, the transformation I saw, that my children and I started to have our devotional prayer and learning to read the bible and listen to the words of the Lord with the leadership of hubby. Before, I seldom read the bible and even my children as well. I also noticed my husband is excited to attend mass to worship Jesus Christ, never happened before after our marriage, I was the one always reminding them to go to catholic church and attend Sunday mass... Until this moment we can not tell what is the plan of our Lord for my husband, it is a huge responsibilities and lots of sacrifices to face and even rejection but we offer this services to the Lord above and we believe in Him... Thank you Lord for keeping us always in our side even we tried to do our own ways.

Currently on 4 years myself. It's weird because the last gal I was with I fell in love with too quickly to admit and it was a catalyst to ultimately end things. It was a learning experience, and becoming less afraid of those feelings of "the one that got away" are never going to go away, but I truly believe thats a good thing.

I didn't give a chance to this nice guy, because I was chasing some jerk. I regret it so much, because he was so caring. He was the first one to wish me a happy birthday, texts me good morning everyday, laughs at my stupid jokes, always asked if I have eaten or not, and was always there for me. I made a mistake and hurted him alot. I miss him. I loved him at the wrong time and now I feel alone. He was so good to me and I just messed up. Things will never be the same.

Listened to this song a month ago and it was too accurate to the breakup I was going through. Another month before that, I broke up with my boyfriend because I had lost hope in our relationship and thought the way we handled things differently would cause us to never work out. I was so heartbroken every day after the breakup, even though we were on okay terms and I had initiated it.

This song helped me realize that love is about working things out because nothing matters more to you than the other person. Listened on repeat, then realized that I was going to be strong and not give up on the love that was still there.

I know this is more of a break up song, but it resonates to me completely differently. Back when I was a kid most kids my age didn’t like me and older people, including my older sister and mom, didn’t seem to love/care for me either, but one day my mom forced my sister to take me when she went out with her friend (guy) and he was one of the first older person I felt was genuinely nice to me. I always looked up to him, but sadly wasn’t able to pay it forward to him. Many years after first meeting him, me and my mom got into a big argument right before he came over and overwhelmed with anger I went to my room. When he came in the first thing he asked my mom was where I was and that he wanted to make sure to say hi to me since he was just stopping by. I came out, just to basically shrug him off not knowing that was the last time I would ever see him since he killed himself later that same week. I often blame myself because if I had shown him the same love that he had always shown everyone that day, maybe he wouldn’t have gone through with it. He was always good to me, and I just want to tell him that I’m sorry.

When I hear this song, I think about my ex as I'm sure many of us do. But it's more than just that, it's realizing your destructive tendencies, how young you are, and how we still have so much to learn in life before we can truly give ourselves away to other people. Before we can truly love with every fiber of our being, before we can love selflessly in the right way with a whole heart. My ex walked out on me, and took my year old son with her, so when i hear this song, it makes me dissect the lyrics, especially the "swear I'm different than before, I won't hurt you anymore." Because that was one of the things that I said to try and get another chance, to show her how much I could love her and our son. But alas, it didn't work, and now over 9 months later, we are both leading very different lives, going different directions, and I honestly think we're better for it. But hearing a song like this, just months after that whole situation, it's insane to relate to art so much. This song means so much to me. I’ve been the toxic one in every relationship and friendship. I was having a hard time loving myself. It’s like I’m made of flaws, like I don’t have anything good in me. Then I met this one person who somehow thought I was perfect. Me being me, I ruined it.
