Jeremy Zucker & Chelsea Cutler Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the worst of it all
I still believe in you
And these nightmares we've kept
In the heat of it all
I made an enemy
Put our demons to rest

So I'll swallow my pride, and fall in line, and
You could just say that, "Everything's fine"
But we both know that's not enough, mm

So I'll promise you I'll be the best thing for us
Then I'll fight with your friends and I'll trash your apartment
I'll lie to you, screaming I'd die for you
Knowing how hard it'll be to get back where we started
In Paris you asked me if I was afraid
That we'd fall out of love, would that be okay?
Emily

And in spite of it all
You're still my everything
When we're nothing at all
Come to think of it all
You are the centerpiece
Around which I revolve

So I'll bury the hurt and wait my turn
And we can pretend that people unlearn
When we both know, it's not enough, mm

So I'll promise you I'll be the best thing for us
Then I'll fight with your friends and I'll trash your apartment
I'll lie to you, screaming I'd die for you
Knowing how hard it'll be to get back where we started
In Paris you asked me if I was afraid
That we'd fall out of love, would that be okay?

Overall Meaning

The song "emily" by Jeremy Zucker is a tribute to the ups and downs of a tumultuous relationship between two people named Emily and the singer. Despite the difficulties and challenges that come with being in such a relationship, the singer still believes in Emily and the love they share. The first verse describes the dark moments they've been through and the nightmares they've kept. The chorus shows the singer swallowing his pride, promising to be the best thing for Emily, while still acknowledging that just saying everything is fine isn't enough. The second verse talks about how Emily is still the singer's everything, even when they are nothing at all. The singer buries the hurt and waits his turn, pretending that people unlearn, while still knowing that it's not enough.

Throughout the song, the lyrics are honest, raw, and heartfelt. The singer doesn't try to hide the challenges of the relationship but openly admits that it will take a lot of work to get back where they started. Emily is a symbol for the love that the singer and this person share, but it's not an easy love to navigate. There are fights and lies, but the singer promises to be there and fight for the relationship.

this song is truly a brilliant masterpiece.. so openly discussing a toxic relationship where YOU are the primary source of toxicity requires so much vulnerability. it is so easy for us as humans to place blame on others and ignore the fact that we ourselves are often a big part of the problem too. it’s a very scary thing for people to acknowledge these dark sides of ourselves that we don’t want anyone else to see because we ourselves don’t even want to admit that they’re...well...us. idk whether or not this song was drawn from personal experience or not, but jeremy & chelsea are insane writers, producers, and artists. they take their music to a place most other musicians don’t dare to go. that’s why they will always be two of my absolute & all time favorites. this ep is groundbreaking for me.
