1) Jerry Butler, Jr. (born December 8, 1939 in Sunflower, Mississippi) is an American soul singer also known as "The Ice Man" because of his cool demeanour while singing often intensely emotional lyrics.

Butler was dubbed the "Iceman" by a Philadelphia disc jockey while performing in a Philadelphia theater. However, Butler achieved what eluded many earlier Doo Wop groups during the 1950s and 1960s — longevity. Butler’s solo career had a string of hits, including "He Will Break Your Heart," "Moon River," "Make It Easy On Yourself," "Let It Be Me" (the Everly Brothers classic re-done as a duet with Betty Everett), "Brand New Me," "Ain’t Understanding Mellow," (duet with Brenda Lee Eager), and "Never Gonna Give You Up," followed by two hugely successful albums The Iceman Cometh in 1968 and Ice On Ice in 1970. The Iceman Cometh garnered Butler three Grammy nominations. Jerry Butler further made recordings for Philadelphia International Records in the 80's. His most noted song for the label was "Cooling Out"

Discovered this in the early 90's rifling through my uncle's 8 tracks. No joke. Fell in love with this and Stevie Wonder's My Cherie Amour and would spend HOURS just listening to tracks from the 60's and 70's. I lost my uncle last Thanksgiving and it's dawned on me that I need to be that same vessel for our experience the way my uncle Charles was for me.

Lord, I grew up on this, remember when they had the record players, my parents had the stereo with those large speakers built in it, with cloth covering them on each side of the stereo, and this thing had mad bass to it and it took up one whole side of our wall, it played 45's and 33's, God I miss those days!!! Reminds me of my mom, she loved Jerry Butler. I remember we had wood and leather bar,it was nice had 8 Trac, and record player. It also had colored lights that would blink to the beat of the music. She would have been 71 today, she's been gone for 25 years.

The jazz compilation album "Blue Note: The Lost Grooves", part of the Blue Note Rare Groove series, brought me here. Grant Green did a jazz cover of this in the 1970s. He also covered the Isley Brothers hit "It's Your Thing", which was released one year after this song. He recorded these jazz covers at the same venue, which is the Cliche Lounge in Newark, New Jersey. These tracks were released as bonus tracks on the CD reissue of the Grant Green album "Alive!".

That Ronnie Baker I-III-V-octave bass lick may have been lifted from Jamerson's bassline in the Marvelettes, "Here I Am, Baby," and may also have been the foundation for "Don't Leave Me This Way!" And with Earl Young laying a Motown-style drum beat, one could tell that the Philly team still had yet to find an identity of its own! Great tune, though!
