I'm the One That Loves You
Jerry Butler Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm the one who loves you
I'm the one who loves you

Little girl again you are blue
Another fellow has gone and left you
I see you've come back to me your best friend
To tell another tragic story again
And once more you look in my eyes
And one more time you ought to realize

That I'm the one who loves you
I'm the one who loves you, love me

I'm the one who loves you
I'm the one who loves you

I must confess, you're not to be blamed
For being caught in those boys vicious games
This time I won't let you go back
Never again, my dear, in fact

I'm going to stop the blueness in you
Also confess what my heart wants me to

That I'm the one who loves you
I'm the one who loves you, love me

I'm the one who loves you
I'm the one who loves you

Just once more you look in my eyes
And one more time you ought to realize

That I'm the one who loves you
I'm the one who loves you, love me

I'm the one who loves you
I'm the one who loves you

I'm the one who loves you

This is one the prettiest songs Jerry did. I love it and I thank you for posting it. I also love the Impressions rendition of this as well. I just love the song! Takes me back to my fun days.

@MrBillbies

Background strings and Impressions put it on top for me, and Darryl Banks has a great stand alone interpretation, then there's the backup instrumental to Darryl's which is VG too. But can't fight anyone's version so far

@sweetsdawson

Jerry, Curtis and Major came from the same housing project in Chicago. All 3 versions by each is a classic in itself. Even Carlo Santana did this song. I love them all....

@rollerchickable

I LOVE THIS SONG THANK YOU FOR SHARING.

@jor99912

You're right! Curtis Mayflield & the Impressions was the best version! I'm no expert on the 5 stairsteps, I've heard them here! But someone who thinks they did anything better than the Original Old Timers must be a Bubble Gummer!

@TheBeatAlien

@jamessanders492

J.B. YOU ARE THE BEST THANK GOD FOR VOICES LIKE YOURS

@robertvelez8485

On the 2 versions of "I'm The One Who Loves You," Jerry's original version features the Impressions doing outstanding background vocals however, I feel a closer connection to the meaning of the song with the songwriting and voice of Curtis Mayfield!

@ksun

Major Lance & the 5 Stairsteps both recorded this - I think Curtis Mayfield wrote it. I really like the 5 stairsteps' version best

@sheilapalmer224
