1) Jerry Butler, Jr. (born December 8, 1939 in Sunflower, Mississippi) is an American soul singer also known as "The Ice Man" because of his cool demeanour while singing often intensely emotional lyrics.
Butler was dubbed the "Iceman" by a Philadelphia disc jockey while performing in a Philadelphia theater. However, Butler achieved what eluded many earlier Doo Wop groups during the 1950s and 1960s — longevity. Butler’s solo career had a string of hits, including "He Will Break Your Heart," "Moon River," "Make It Easy On Yourself," "Let It Be Me" (the Everly Brothers classic re-done as a duet with Betty Everett), "Brand New Me," "Ain’t Understanding Mellow," (duet with Brenda Lee Eager), and "Never Gonna Give You Up," followed by two hugely successful albums The Iceman Cometh in 1968 and Ice On Ice in 1970. The Iceman Cometh garnered Butler three Grammy nominations. Jerry Butler further made recordings for Philadelphia International Records in the 80's. His most noted song for the label was "Cooling Out"
Let It Be Me

I want to stay around you
And so I beg you, let it be me
Don't take this heaven from one
If you must cling to someone
Now and forever, let it be me
I find complete love
Oh, without your sweet love what would life be
So never leave me lonely
Tell me you love me only
And that you'll always let it be me
And that you'll always let it be me
Each time we meet love
I find complete love
Without your sweet love what would life be
So never leave me lonely
Tell me you love me only
And that you'll always let it be me
And that you'll always let it be me
The lyrics to Jerry Butler's song Let It Be Me express the depth of the singer's love and desire for the person they're addressing. The opening lines express gratitude for the day the singer found the person, whom they want to be around all the time. The singer implores the person, "let it be me," asking them to choose them as the one they cling to and let into their life. The singer acknowledges the possibility that the person may choose someone else, but begs them not to take "this heaven" away from them.
The chorus of the song describes the completeness and significance of the love the singer feels for the other person. Without their love, life would be incomplete and lonely. The singer pleads with the person to always love them and choose them as their partner.
Overall, the lyrics embody a deep sense of vulnerability, sincerity, and the willingness to take a risk for love.
