1) Jerry Butler, Jr. (born December 8, 1939 in Sunflower, Mississippi) is an American soul singer also known as "The Ice Man" because of his cool demeanour while singing often intensely emotional lyrics.
Butler was dubbed the "Iceman" by a Philadelphia disc jockey while performing in a Philadelphia theater. However, Butler achieved what eluded many earlier Doo Wop groups during the 1950s and 1960s — longevity. Butler’s solo career had a string of hits, including "He Will Break Your Heart," "Moon River," "Make It Easy On Yourself," "Let It Be Me" (the Everly Brothers classic re-done as a duet with Betty Everett), "Brand New Me," "Ain’t Understanding Mellow," (duet with Brenda Lee Eager), and "Never Gonna Give You Up," followed by two hugely successful albums The Iceman Cometh in 1968 and Ice On Ice in 1970. The Iceman Cometh garnered Butler three Grammy nominations. Jerry Butler further made recordings for Philadelphia International Records in the 80's. His most noted song for the label was "Cooling Out"

All alone in this big world, baby, baby, baby
(Hey, baby)
Lost in a state of misery
Not a soul to comfort me, baby
(Hey, baby)
I couldn't find no help
Oh, I was standing in confusion
So badly disillusioned
When you wrapped your arms around me
I knew love had found me
I was lost, so long
But found in the nick of time
You know I was lost, so long
But found in the nick of time
Oh, I was lost
I thank the Lord that you
Are the one who came to my rescue, baby
(Hey, baby)
Thanks for me and this heart of mine
You came just in time, baby, baby
(Hey, baby)
I couldn't find my way, ooh
Don't you hear what I say, yeah?
Well I was standing in confusion
So badly disillusioned
When you wrapped your arms around me
I knew love had found me
I was lost, so long
But found in the nick of time
You know I was lost, yeah
(So lost)
But found in the nick of time
Well, I was out here in desperation
No means of communication
Just looking for a sign
Then you threw out your lifeline
Lost, so long
But found in the nick of time
You know I was lost, yes I was
(So lost)
But found in the nick of time
Well, I was out here in desperation
No means of communication
Just looking for a sign
Then you threw out your lifeline
Oh, so lost, so long
But found in the nick of time
You know I was lost, yeah
(So lost)
But found in the nick of time
The lyrics of Jerry Butler's song "Lost" poignantly convey the experience of a lonely and confused individual who finds solace in the arms of a lover. The singer reveals her misery and loneliness in the first few lines and expresses gratitude towards the person who rescues her from her despair. The second verse continues to outline the singer's desperation and her inability to find her way, until her lover throws her a lifeline and guides her towards love and happiness.
The refrain of "Lost, so long, but found in the nick of time" emphasizes the importance of timing and the idea of being found just in time. The singer's loneliness and confusion were deep-set, to the point where she was no longer able to find a way back to stability. However, it was at the very moment when she was at her lowest that her lover came into her life like a beacon of hope, providing comfort, and assuring her that love is always a possibility.
The song's lyrics also stress the theme of gratitude, which is apparent in lines like "I thank the Lord that you are the one who came to my rescue." Overall, the song tells a simple but relatable story about the transformative power of love and the importance of timing in relationships.
