One of its founders, Garcia performed with the Grateful Dead for their entire thirty-year career (1965–1995). Garcia also founded and participated in a variety of side projects, including the Saunders–Garcia Band (with longtime friend Merl Saunders), the Jerry Garcia Band, Old and in the Way, the Garcia/Grisman acoustic duo, Legion of Mary, and the New Riders of the Purple Sage (which Garcia co-founded with John Dawson and David Nelson). He also released several solo albums, and contributed to a number of albums by other artists over the years as a session musician. He was well known for his distinctive guitar playing and was ranked 46th in Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" cover story.
Later in life, Garcia was sometimes ill because of his diabetes, and in 1986 went into a diabetic coma that nearly cost him his life. Although his overall health improved somewhat after that, he also struggled with heroin and cocaine addictions, and was staying in a California drug rehabilitation facility when he died of a heart attack in August 1995.
I Second That Emotion
Jerry Garcia Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But only for one night with no repeat.
And maybe you'll go away and never call,
And a taste of honey is worse that none at all.
Oh little girl!
In that case I don't want nobody
I do believe that that would only break my heart
If you got the notion,
I second that emotion.
So, if you feel like giving me a lifetime of devotion
I second that emotion.
Maybe you'll think that love will tie you down
And you don't have the time to hang around.
Or maybe you'll think that love will make us fools,
And so it makes you wise to break the rules.
Oh little girl!
In that case I don't want nobody
I do believe that that would only break my heart
Oh, but if you feel like lovin' me
If you got the notion,
I second that emotion.
So, if you feel like giving me a lifetime of devotion
I second that emotion.
In that case I don't want nobody
I do believe that that would only break my heart
Oh, but if you feel like lovin' me
If you got the notion,
I second that emotion.
So, if you feel like giving me a lifetime of devotion
I second that emotion.
The lyrics of "I Second That Emotion" by Jerry Garcia can be interpreted as a plea from a man to a woman who seems hesitant to commit to a relationship. In the first verse, the man acknowledges that the woman may only want a one-night stand and not be interested in a repeat encounter. He makes it clear that he would rather be alone than be hurt by fleeting affection, stating that "a taste of honey is worse than none at all." However, in the chorus, the man conveys that if the woman is interested in a genuine and lasting connection, he wholeheartedly endorses the idea and "seconds" that emotion.
The second verse explores the woman's potential reasons for resisting love: feeling constrained, lacking time, or believing that love is foolish. The man states that he does not want to be with someone who is not committed but again emphasizes that he is ready and willing to be with her if she is ready to give him her love. Overall, the song's message is that love should not be taken lightly or entered into casually, but when it is genuine and lasting, it is worth pursuing.
