Love Letters In The Sand
Jerry Lee Lewis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On a day like today,
We pass the time away
Writing love letters in the sand.

Oh, you laughed when I cried
Each time I saw the tide
Take our love letters in the sand.
You made a vow that you would always be true
But somehow, that vow meant nothing to you

Now my poor heart just aches

With every wave that breaks
Over love letters in the sand.

Overall Meaning

The song "Love Letters in the Sand" by Jerry Lee Lewis speaks about the bittersweet memories of a love that has drifted away. The song reminisces about how the couple would spend their days writing love letters to each other in the sand. However, the love that once seemed eternal had vanished, and the once-promised loyalty and sincerity were forgotten. The singer cannot help but feel heartbroken as they see love letters written on the sand washed away by the waves consistently, just like their love had been.

Jerry Lee Lewis's song can be interpreted as a cautionary tale of how love can be fickle and how once promises are made in the midst of passion, they can be forgotten. Love letters written in the sand are fragile representations of love, and as they are erased by the tide, so can love suffer the same fate. The chorus of the song is particularly heart-wrenching, as the singer's poor heart aches with every wave that breaks over love letters in the sand.

@PaulGaston88

It was on what is known as Sun 102... A 12 LP box set called, "The Sun Years" that contained everything he recorded at Sun Records. It was released in 1983 and I remember paying about $65. Now, you can find it on eBay and other places. It doesn't cost too much in the places I see. But in 2015, a new Jerry Lee Lewis box set came out that is supposed to REALLY have all he recorded at Sun and costs lots more lol

Just discovered this. My grandfather, Nick Kenny and his brother, Charles, wrote and published this song in the 1930s. Pat Boone had a major hit with it in 1956. .
