Every Eye Open
Jesse Marchant Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Thought you had opened
Your heart to me
Every light shone, I was mistaken
Don't these friends fall out
Ain't they leaves on the ground
Laid into place for you
I remember the nights
When you and I were high
And reclaimed a youth

Your skin in the sun
Your hair in the wind
Every eye open pulls you in
But you are less than what you are
I seen the one you lost
The way you skip across the sand
Lying dead in the ocean
I waited on the pull of your hand

Does it bring you up
To stake your line
In anyone who'll gather around
To live on the grounds
Of your half-whole life
A lie you stake into your life too
The patching of holes
And the light
From the secrets
That shines through

All the waste from the inside
Well I've been living in lies too
Yeah, I've been holding 'em down
And the secret sin

That I've loved you
For more than a little while

Overall Meaning

The song Every Eye Open by Jesse Marchant is a melancholic ballad that addresses the complexities of relationships and emotions. The lyrics suggest that the singer has been deceived by someone who he believed opened their heart to him. He remembers the moments when they were together and feels deceived. The lines "Thought you had opened / Your heart to me / Every light shone, I was mistaken" expresses the singer's disappointment and disillusionment.

The next lines "Don't these friends fall out / Ain't they leaves on the ground / Laid into place for you" portray the fragility of relationships and how they can easily fall apart, like leaves that eventually fall to the ground. The following lines "I remember the nights / When you and I were high / And reclaimed a youth" evoke the nostalgia associated with happy moments, but also the realization that those times have gone.

The chorus "Your skin in the sun / Your hair in the wind / Every eye open pulls you in / But you are less than what you are" advances the theme of deception and disillusionment. The singer suggests that the person he was with is not what she appears to be, indicating that she is not living up to her full potential. The lines "I seen the one you lost / The way you skip across the sand / Lying dead in the ocean / I waited on the pull of your hand" are a metaphorical reference to the loss of innocence and the feeling of being left behind.

Overall, the song is a poignant reminder that relationships are fragile, and even the best of intentions can lead to heartbreak. It suggests that we need to be honest with ourselves and others, and that the truth, no matter how painful, is always the best option.

I can't get enough of this song.

It's almost 3 years later and this song still feels like the day you left. I will never forget the pain I felt and the nights I slept on the beach longing for you after you moved. I didn't know I was fighting for my life at the same time. If I could go back to before you left I would and fight like hell against cancer to see you one more time. I might have moved on and you said we'd always have our memories but the memory is too painful so I don't really have those memories. If I could have done one thing differently I would have stayed the last night with you. It was just too hard but I would do anything to get that one night. Best wishes my friend. I know you'll come across this message one day and I can only hope it was as special to you as it was to me my friend. Best wishes XOXO

A song that I’ve just heard for the first time but instantly took me back to a very particular part of my life. Strange how music can do that.

Just found my newest song to obsess over. What a gem.
