Our Hearts Are Wrong
Jessica Lea Mayfield Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Into your house I'll not let hate be the one
To make me make it for you
My self esteem is heating up the room
You're intimidating as all hell
But I ain't scared of you
[Chorus]
I am just like you
No matter what you say
Our hearts are wrong
Our hearts are wrong
Love has brought me down
Like love's been known to do
I tried to deny with all my heart
That I am in love with you
I don't really care
You knew that's what I'd say
The only time I miss you
Is every single day
[Chorus]
The lyrics of Jessica Lea Mayfield's song Our Hearts Are Wrong are about the complexities and contradictions of love and hate. The singer seems to be in a conflicted state of mind, feeling both attraction and animosity towards their romantic interest. The first verse begins with the singer acknowledging that hate has brought them up the stairs into their lover's house, but they refuse to let hate be the driving force behind their actions. The second line, "I'll not let hate be the one to make me make it for you," suggests that the singer is determined to approach the situation from a more positive perspective.
The next few lines reveal the singer's feelings of intimidation in the presence of their lover, but they quickly assert that they're not afraid. The chorus is a poignant reflection on the universality of human emotions, suggesting that despite their differences, the singer and their lover are fundamentally the same: "I know how you work/I am just like you/No matter what you say/Our hearts are wrong." In the second verse, the singer acknowledges that the strength of their love has brought them down, and they struggled to deny their feelings. Despite their stubbornness, the singer admits that they miss their lover every day.

I found this perfect song in the car with my friendgroup when it was around 10:00pm, most of my friends were asleep cause we were coming back from Hershey park (which is a amusement park for those who don’t know) this song started playing and I was in the very back seat with 2 other friends and we were having so much fun it was so perfect, I asked about this song and wrote it in my notes app, only a few months later I found it again. This has been my go to sad song because of how happy this memory was. I’ve moved away from it all since then (didn’t want to but my parents made the choice since I’m only a teenager) but it isn’t getting better I miss my home very single day it seems. I miss some of my friends, I miss going to the local family shops and going to get boba, going to the park at 12am, and the cute little romance there was. I miss you so so so much Virginia, unfortunately that chapter in my life has closed and I’ll see even better :,) so bittersweet - mostly bitter but still.

Wow. I’m so glad I found this again. I gave myself a headache for 15min trying to remember the title. Still as beautiful now as it was over 10 years ago ❤

Killer tune. "The only time I miss you is every single day" --what a line! This tune is mesmerizing. Great production job by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys also.

I didn't even know I liked this type of music, but while working an over night feeling tired, alone and drained I was scanning through radio stations and heard her interview on npr, fell in love with her voice before she even started to sing, the sweet melodic darkness of her songs is entrancing.

her voice just has this...quality. it's hard to describe but it's alluring and it made me like this song from the first word.

There is hope for the new generation of singer/songwriters -- there are a few, but Jessica is at the front of the line. Very impressive. Steady, soulful, intense, well-thought out and simply beautiful.
