The Crucifixion
Jesus Christ Lyrics

JESUS

Father forgive them.
They don't know what they're doing.
My God, my God, why have you forgotten me?
Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit.

Overall Meaning

In The Crucifixion song by Jesus Christ, the lyrics express the emotions and thoughts of Jesus when He was on the cross. The first line, "Father forgive them," shows Jesus' forgiveness towards those who were torturing and crucifying Him. He prays to His Father to forgive them; this line is a reflection of Jesus' nature as a forgiving and compassionate person.

The second line, "They don't know what they're doing," signifies Jesus' understanding of the situation. He knows that the people who are crucifying Him are unaware of the gravity of their actions. Jesus sees beyond the physical act to the spiritual truth that their ignorance is coming from a lack of understanding.

The third line, "My God, my God, why have you forgotten me?" is a question that Jesus asks God. It reflects Jesus' feelings of desolation as He struggles with the painful situation He finds Himself in. Finally, the fourth line "Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit" is Jesus' acknowledgement that He has completed His mission and is ready to return to God the Father.

Please consider this:

A man is waiting at a crosswalk of a very busy intersection. He hears the panicking cries of a terrified mother behind him. Turning around he sees a toddler running in his direction, giving every sign the child will run past him and bolt into traffic. The man could effortlessly extend his hand and stop the toddler, saving the child's life. He could also prevent the untold heartaches of a mom watching her child die horribly, a motorist's trauma who accidently kills a person, and the grief of every witness, relative and friend.

Instead the man mumbles to himself "that kid has free will" and does nothing. Brakes screech, vehicles collide, lives are ruined, and one is lost.

Is that man evil? Yes or no.

How is a god who could have just as easily stopped it (and all other catastrophes) also not evil?
Or do you hold your God to a lower standard than even that single lowly human?

Either your god cannot stop catastrophes, or doesn't care to, or doesn't exist.
That means either your god is powerless, or evil, or imaginary.
Take your pick and choose wisely.
