Put this dead fish in my hand
Paperweight baby it's my name
I hold you down coz your all the same to me
That's right
Say whatever you want baby, I'm your man
And I can help you yes I can
I can't relate coz your all the same to me
That's right
Makes no difference what they say
We're goin' on holiday
Jumped my boat off the coast at Biscay
We're goin' on holiday
Been up all night and I sleep all day
Why oh why do I live this way
Hey pretty girl sit next to me
Coz I'm a ten foot diamond Christmas tree
Makes no difference what they say
We're goin' on holiday
Hold my calls just get me on the front page
We're goin' on holiday
Makes no difference what they say
We're goin' on holiday
Jumped my boat off the coast at Biscay
We're goin' on holiday
The lyrics to Jet's song "Holiday" offer an intriguing perspective on life's monotony and the desire to escape it. The opening lines, "Got this notion from another man, put this dead fish in my hand," suggest a sense of powerlessness and lack of control- as if the singer is taking on another person's ideas and feeling the weight of it like a dead fish in their hand. The repeated phrase, "paperweight baby it's my name" could metaphorically signify the burdensome weight of societal norms and expectations that the singer feels they must carry.
The chorus, "Makes no difference what they say, we're goin' on holiday," serves as a clear statement of intent- that the singer is willing to ignore societal expectations and instead prioritize their own desires to escape and find a sense of freedom. They even take it a step further by saying "hold my calls just get me on the front page," perhaps suggesting a need for recognition or validation for their decision to break free from the norm.
The verses that follow add to the sense of restlessness and dissatisfaction with life. The lyrics "been up all night and I sleep all day, why oh why do I live this way" suggest a lack of purpose and direction in life. The final lines about being a "ten foot diamond Christmas tree" could represent a false front or outward appearance that the singer feels pressured to present to the world, while still feeling empty inside.
Overall, "Holiday" offers a commentary on the struggle to find meaning and individuality in a society that tries to dictate how we should live our lives. The desire for escape and adventure is a common human experience, and this song captures it in a catchy and relatable way.
