Rollover D.J
Jet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Got your rhymes going 'round in my head
Got your supersonic beats mixing up my keds
So dance little DJ come on
What's your name?

I wanna move but it don't feel right
'Cause you've been playing other people's songs all night
So tell what you're trying to say
What's your name?

[Chorus]
Hey, rollover DJ
You're spinning away
On my time
Hey, who cares what you play
Say whatever you say, 'cause I don't mind
Hey, roll over DJ, if you don't mind

Well I know that you think you're a star
A pill poppin' jukebox is all that you are
So tell me it ain't that way
What's you're name?

[Chorus]

Hey, rollover DJ
You're spinning away
On my time
Hey, who cares what you play
Say whatever you say, 'cause I don't mind
Hey, roll over DJ, if you don't mind
Hey, roll over DJ, if you don't mind

Hey, roll over DJ, if you don't mind
Yeah.

Overall Meaning

The song "Rollover D.J." by Jet is a classic rock track with a catchy melody and lyrics that delve into the world of DJs and their role in the music industry. The song is essentially addressing a particular DJ, who has been playing other people's tracks all night and not giving a chance to the band's songs, which highlights the frustration of artists at the hands of DJs who don't seem to care about the artistry involved. The verses reference the DJ's beats being stuck in the singer's head and "mixing up my keds," which could be interpreted to mean the mixed feelings and frustration of being entranced by the DJ's music but feeling unsatisfied with the lack of originality.

The chorus repeatedly calls out the DJ to "rollover" in a sense, or give up playing other people's music for the sake of commercial success. The singer doesn't care what the DJ plays, and the chorus suggests that the DJ should give up the act altogether, with a final plea to rollover if the DJ doesn't mind. The lyrics suggest that DJs, like many artists, might be more concerned with their reputation and popularity than with the music's integrity, but the vocalist isn't afraid to call them out and invite them to switch things up and play something new.

When these guys first came out, around the same time as The Strokes, I was so excited and was convinced that Rock n Roll was making a comeback in the states and that the American rock scene would finally revive. And Jet sounded so American, but when I found out they were Australian I was just like "ooohh of course, that's why they have been able to get to the point they are at. Because other countries don't completely over saturate everything with pop and rap and electric music. Not that there is anything wrong with those genres. But in the US, especially major cities, the only way to hear new rock music on the radio is to listen to a college station or something along those lines. And even those play the same kind of music on mainstream stations. Why can't we just give rock a chance again!?

@toot1231

+Joshua Levinsky I remember hearing Jet a ton in the early 2ks along with Staind and Linkin Park
so to me rock was really popular in the early 2k's even into the mid 2k's with Green Day and The Killers being huge.

but, I agree nowadays rock is shit and the good rock music you gotta search in the bowels of bandcamp to dig up gold.
You should check out the Doom scene going on though bit heavier but its to its core rock and roll

check out Stoned Meadow Of Doom channel

When these guys first came out, I was so excited to hear someone who sounded like music from the 70s. Wait, no I thought I'd heard their sound before, yeah that's what it was.
