The song "That's Alright Mama" by Jet is a cover of a 1954 song by Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup. The lyrics convey a rebellious attitude towards criticisms from both the singer's parents and societal norms. The chorus, "That's alright, mama, that's alright for you" conveys the message of acceptance and individualism. The singer's mama and papa warn him about the woman he is seeing while he insists on pursuing her anyway, saying "that's alright now mama, anyway you do." He then decides to leave town, perhaps so he can be with the woman without facing criticism from his parents, saying "I'm leaving town, baby / I'm leaving town for sure." The singer admits that he needs the woman's love, but with an attitude that suggests he'll do what he wants regardless of what others say.
The lyrics of this song are packed with meaning and messages. They convey a feeling of rebellion and the desire to push societal norms. The singer is willing to defy his parents' wishes and criticism to be with the woman he loves. The iconic chorus "That's alright now mama, anyway you do" suggests acceptance and individualism, further enforcing the idea of going against the grain. The singer's need for love is conveyed both through his words and his rebellious actions.
