He accidentally attempted to launch it back at base when they were testing piloting. He pressed a bunch of random buttons and switches and ultimately jammed it in the process without realizing it.

He was always planned to sacrifice himself. In the original cut, he flew a bi-plane with a missile strapped on as a joke, but they wanted a little more drama and character development instead of the silliness of the climax.

My favourite part of this movie is when Russell gives his little speech about seeking revenge on the Aliens and even after everything that has happened up until that point in the movie, they still look at his as though he is completely craxy! 😂

Still this movie... I was 4 when it was showed in the movie theater. My dad took me with him, I was too young but because of this one action this remains my favorite movie of all time.
