Slipstream
Jethro Tull Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well the lush separation unfolds you
And the products of wealth
Push you along on the bow wave
Of their spiritless undying selves
And you press on God's waiter your last dime
As he hands you the bill
And you spin in the slipstream
Tideless, unreasoning
Paddle right out of the mess

And you paddle right out of the mess

Overall Meaning

In "Slipstream," Ian Anderson, the lead vocalist and flutist of Jethro Tull, sings about the breakdown of society, where the pursuit of wealth pushes individuals to lose themselves in the process. The first two lines of the lyrics are metaphorical, where the "lush separation" represents the division created among people, and "the products of wealth" symbolize the things that make people think money equates to happiness. The phrase "bow wave" is a term used to describe the wake of a ship, where people behind the wealthy attempt to follow their lead, sacrificing everything to attain similar success.

The next part of the lyrics talks about one's struggle to maintain what little they have left. The singer of the song is down to their last dime, yet as they look to God's waiter for help, they are handed a bill. This represents the fact that the rich get richer, and the poor are left to fend for themselves. In the final lines of the song, Anderson urges people to detach themselves from this materialistic world and the mess it has created, symbolized by "the slipstream tideless, unreasoning." Anderson believes that people should paddle, which is symbolic of forging their own paths or living life on their terms.
