I'd like to teach the World to sing
Jevetta Steele Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'd like to build a world a home
And furnish it with love.
Grow apple trees and honey bees
And snow white turtle doves.

I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony.
I'd like to hold it in my arms,
And keep it company

I'd like to see the world for once
All standing hand in hand.
And hear them echo through the hills
For peace throughout the land.

It's the real thing
What the world wants today,
That's the way it'll stay
With the real thing.

I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony.
A song of peace that echoes on
And never goes away.

Put your hand in my hand
Let's begin today,
With your hand in my hand
Help me find a way.

I'd like to see the world for once
All standing hand in hand.
And hear them echo through the hills
For peace throughout the land.

I'd like to teach the world to sing,
In perfect harmony.
A song of peace that echos on,
And never goes away.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jevetta Steele's "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" convey a powerful message of hope, unity, and peace. The song speaks to the basic human desire for love and connection, and suggests that through music and a shared appreciation of nature, we can build a better world together.

The first two lines of the song, "I'd like to build a world a home / And furnish it with love" set the tone for the rest of the lyrics. The singer is describing a vision of a world filled with love, where everyone is connected and cared for. The image of apple trees, honey bees, and turtle doves evokes a sense of peace and harmony in nature.

The second verse of the song, "I'd like to see the world for once / All standing hand in hand" takes this vision a step further. The singer imagines a world where people are united, not divided by differences in race, religion, or nationality. The repetitions of the phrases "Let's begin today" and "Help me find a way" suggest that the work of building this world begins with individual actions and efforts.

The chorus of the song ("I'd like to teach the world to sing...") provides a rallying cry for peace and unity. The repetition of the phrase "the real thing" emphasizes the idea that what the world needs most is authenticity and genuine connection. The final lines of the song, "A song of peace that echoes on / And never goes away" suggest that the power of music and collective action can create a lasting impact on the world.

These two, Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy were the most beloved couples of their time. Their music was beautiful. Their voices entwined were angelic, and they were most surely the personification of a true love 💑 couple. Their music will live on in the hearts of many. From Naughty Marietta to I married an Angel. I am so grateful for my parents introducing me to such wonderful music. Ones that live in my heart, now and forever. Thank you very much for sharing this.

My parents had few musical favorites (1915 - 1985). The Indian Love Call was as moving to a five year old boy as it was to them. They saw it in the cinema just as the Depression began to tear their economic futures to shreds. What was moving to me was and stays so to everyone, cloying sense of the fragility of life and love. Thanks for your post.

I’m glad to know that while filming Rose Marie they were reconnecting in a loving and profound way. I sincerely hope that they are together, in love, for all eternity. Those that kept them apart should have to witness their joy forever too.

That's a commitment that is possible to exist if the parts are loyal on their hearts and souls 😊
