Down So Long
Jewel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The sun sets across the ocean
I'm a thousand miles from anywhere
And my pocketbook and my heart
Both just got stolen and the sun acts like
She don't even care the wind blows cold
When you reach the to feels like someones face
Is stuck to the bottom of my shoe
I got a plastic Jesus
And a cordless telephone
For every corner of my room
Got everybody but you
Telling me what to do

But I've been down so long
Oh, it cant be longer still
Ive been down so long
That the end must be drawing near

I look to everybody but me
To answer my prayers
Until I saw an angel
In a bathroom
Who said she saw no one
Worth saving anywhere
And a blind man on the corner
Said, its simple,
Like flipping a coin
Don't matter what side it lands on
If its someone else's dime

But I've been down so long
Oh, it cant be longer still
We've been down for so long
That the end must be drawing near

I take a trip, I catch a train, I catch a plane
I got a ticket in my hand
And then a fat man takes my money
And like cattle we all stand

But we've been down so long
Oh, it cant be longer still
We've been down so long
The end must be

I know the end must be
Oh, I know the end must be, drawing near

Overall Meaning

The song "Down So Long" by Jewel opens with the singer having just experienced two major losses - the first being a physical one, as both her wallet and heart have been stolen, and the second a spiritual one, as she notes that the sun seems to ignore her pain. She describes the feeling of being emotionally and financially stranded, with the wind adding to the desperation she feels. The singer reveals a collection of objects and people she has surrounded herself with. These elements seem to offer little comfort, with the plastic Jesus and cordless phone representing a seemingly futile search for solace in religious and technological arenas, respectively. The chorus serves as a repetition of the sentiment that the singer's long struggle must be drawing to an end, as she has reached a point of deep despair.

The second half of the song includes a shift towards a communal voice, with references to "we" and the experiences of other characters in the song. The singer one again seeks answers from others, including an angel and a blind man on the street. Neither provide much in the way of hope, with the angel claiming that those worth saving are nowhere to be found and the blind man stating that the outcome of things is purely based on chance, and not controlled by any individual. The song ends with a scene of a group of travelers, all standing together, waiting to board a train. As the singer states that "we've been down so long," the song takes on a larger, societal theme, with the struggles of one person becoming a reflection of a larger group experience.

I saw Jewel in concert back in the late 90s. It was just her, her guitar, and the stage. And thousands of fans on the grass singing along. Man I miss those days.

@Hood Priestess Philosophy 🖤 Well said!!!! As Ariana said on a Jimmy Kimmel Mean Tweets edition: "I'd rather listen to an autotuned queef than the new Ariana Grande album."

Hood Priestess Philosophy 🖤

She wasn't back in the day. It's sad to see true talent eventually overshadowed by the Ariana's of today.
