Painters
Jewel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Eighty years, an old lady now, sitting on the front porch
Watching the clouds roll by
They remind her of her lover, how he left her, and of times long ago,
When she used color carelessly, painted his portrait
A thousand times, or maybe just his smile,
Her and her canvas would follow him wherever he would go

'Cause they were painters and they were painting themselves
A lovely world

Oil streaked daisies covered the living room walls
He put water colored roses in her hair
He said, "Love, I love you,
I want to give you the mountains, the sunshine,
The sunset too
I want to give you a world as beautiful as you are to me"

'Cause I'm a painter and I want to paint you
A lovely way

So they sat down and made a drawing of their love,
They made it an art to live by
They painted every passion, every home, created every beautiful child
In the winter they were weavers of warmth,
In the summer they were carpenters of love
They thought blue prints were too sad so they made them yellow

And they were painters and they had painted themselves
A lovely world

Until one day the rain fell as thick as black oil
And in her heart she knew something was wrong
She went running through the orchard screaming,
"No God, don't take him from me!"
But by the time she got there, she feared he already had gone
She got to where he lay, water colored roses in his hands for her
She threw them down screaming, "Damn you man, don't leave me
With nothing left behind but these cold paintings, these cold portraits
To remind me!"

He said, "Love I only leave a little, try to understand
I put my soul in this life we've created with these four hands
Love, I leave, but only a little, this world holds me still
My body may die now, but these paintings are real"
La li lai la li lai la li lai

So many seasons came and many seasons went
And many times she saw her love's face watering the flowers,
Talking to the trees and singing to his children,
And when the wind blew, she knew he was listening,
And how he seemed to laugh along, and how he seemed to hold her
When she was crying

'Cause they were painters and they had painted themselves
A lovely world

Eighty years, an old lady now, sitting on the front porch
Watching the clouds roll by
They remind her of her lover, how he left her, and of times long ago,
When she used color carelessly, painted his portrait
A thousand times, or maybe just his smile,
Her and her canvas would follow him wherever he would go
Yes, she and her canvas still follow

'Cause they are painters and they are painting themselves
A lovely

'Cause they are painters and they are painting themselves
A lovely world

Overall Meaning

"Painters" is a touching song by Jewel that tells the story of a couple who were painters and created a beautiful world for themselves. The song begins with an eighty-year-old lady sitting on her porch, reminiscing about her lover, who had left her long ago. The clouds remind her of him and the times when she would carelessly use color to paint his portrait. She would follow him and her canvas wherever he went, and together they created a lovely world.

The couple not only painted each other but also their surroundings, creating a beautiful world for themselves. They even made it an art to live by, painting every passion, every home, and creating beautiful children. They were weavers of warmth in the winter and carpenters of love in the summer. They believed that blueprints were too sad and made them yellow. They painted their world with love and beauty, leaving behind a legacy that the lady cherished long after he had gone.

However, all this came to a sudden end when her lover died, and she was left with nothing but the paintings and portraits that reminded her of him. But, he had a different perspective, leaving behind a little of himself in the world they had created, and his soul would live on in the paintings. The lady continued to follow him and her canvas, painting a lovely world even in her eighties.

Overall, "Painters" is a heartwarming, emotional song that showcases Jewel's ability to tell a compelling story through her music.

I bought this CD in 8th grade (1998) and for the next three years listened to this CD at least once a day. Painters was always my favorite. I just rediscovered the CD in my stuff this week and listened to Painters for the first time since about 2000. It's just as beautiful as I remember, and now that I have my own love and family, feels even more relevant and heartbreaking.

I found my Pieces of You CD from 1998 the other day and decided to put it on in my car. I had almost forgotten about the song Painters. I used to listen to it over and over again, thinking of my future love, hoping it will be as beautiful as that song. I was in absolute tears listening to it again as I realized I really have found that kind of love. Such a beautiful song.

My amazing wife passed away before last Christmas. This song I've known for 25 years now has a different meaning. We were actually "Gardeners", among other beautiful things. Thanks for the art, it helped and made my world brighter. We'll all meet at the end of the rainbow one day.

@Nenne Panrike Fairytale Art I'm glad it helped in some way. Almost 9 months passed. What a journey. It still hurts, yet love always finds a way to heal us if we allow it to.
