Summer 2020
Jhené Aiko Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And I feel like sometimes I cry
'Cause I feel so good to be alive
And there's not a doubt inside my mind
That you're still here, right here by my side, yeah

I can't wrap my head around what's happenin', uh
I can't get no sleep, no peace of mind, uh
Tryna beat the heat in summer madness, uh
Only thoughts of you can get me by

And I feel like sometimes I cry, uh
'Cause I feel so good to be alive
And there's not a doubt inside my mind, uh
That you're still here, right here by my side, uh

Times are changin', strangers gettin' stranger, uh
Generations faced with genocide, damn
Try to make my way through pain and anger
Then I look into my baby's eyes, uh

And I feel like sometimes I cry, uh
'Cause I feel so good to be alive
When I fall in line with my divine, uh
I can see inside the sun shines more, yeah

I'll take some rain with my sunshine, sunshine, ah
I'll take some rain with my sunshine, uh
I'll take some rain with my sunshine, uh
Take it easy, simple like summertime

Take it easy, yeah
Take it easy, simple, oh

Take it easy, yeah, uh
Take it easy, simple like summertime

Overall Meaning

In Jhené Aiko's song "Summer 2020," she expresses a sense of gratitude for still being alive and for having her lover by her side during this chaotic time. She starts off by saying that sometimes she cries not because she's sad, but because she feels so good to be alive. She then reassures herself that her lover is still with her, which gives her peace of mind. The next verse shows her struggling to cope with the many challenges of life, including trying to beat the heat and dealing with pain and anger. But despite all this, thinking of her lover makes her feel better.

In the bridge, she reflects on the changing times and the intergenerational violence that people are facing today. However, her perspective changes when she looks into her baby's eyes. She then repeats the chorus, emphasizing how being aligned with her divine self allows her to see the sunshine more clearly. The outro encourages the listener to "take it easy" and to simplify their life, the way things are during summertime.
