Barber won the Female Artist Recording of the Year award for her debut album "Oh Heart" at the 2005 Music Nova Scotia Awards. In 2007, Barber earned her fourth win as Best Female Local Solo Artist in The Coast’s annual "Best of Music Reader’s Poll", and her first win as Best Canadian Female Solo Artist for "For All Time".
Barber studied at Queen's University before pursuing her musical career full time. Her breakthrough "For All Time" was recorded & produced in Toronto by Les Cooper (who also performs as a multi-instrumentalist on the album), and features a number of Canada’s musicians; Bazil Donovan (Blue Rodeo) on bass and Blake Manning (Sarah Slean, Kim Stockwood) on drums. Guest appearances include a vocal performance by Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo) on Don’t Go Easy, guitar by singer/songwriter Luke Doucet, piano and clarinet performances by Spencer Evans (Sarah Harmer) and a duet with her brother Matthew Barber. The album was mixed by Andre Wahl (Hawksley Workman, Anne Murray) and mastered by Chris Potter (Sarah McLachlan, Rufus Wainwright). Further albums include "A Note to Follow So", "Oh Heart", and "For All Time".
In 2008, Barber released "Chances", a jazz album with full orchestral arrangements which was partially co-written with her producer Les Cooper, while also collaborating on several songs with Canadian musician Ron Sexsmith.
She followed up with the album ""Mischievous Moon", released through Outside Music in 2011. Barber won the SiriusXM 2012 Jazz Artist of the Year award, as well as the 2013 Western Canadian Francophone Album of the Year for ""Chansons".
Her solo album, ""Metaphora", was released in June 2018. She followed up with another French-language album, ""Entre nous", in 2020, and with ""Homemaker" in 2023.

Oh Heart
Jill Barber Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Your signal is breaking apart
Now you can hardly play
I remember a time
When the lines were so clear
That I would always obey
Somehow these days they keep slipping my mind
Wind you back up Just to keep you in time
And oh how I miss
Those bells as they chimed
Every hour on the hour
They say all is fair in love
So I'm just playing fair
But there's no guarantee against injury
And I think we're in need of repair
Oh heart
I know that you're doing your best
Riding in the backseat
Now you take a rest
And just leave it to me
I'll sing the songs
And you keep the beat
Oh heart
I'm calling a penalty
Our defenses are growing weak
I think what we need is a new strategy
A little space between you and me
Sit out on the bench
And take a little time
Don't think it's so bad here on the sidelines There's no need to frown just because you are done
I think you're gonna be fine
Oh heart
I know that you're doing your best
Riding in the backseat
Oh heart
I'm not calling defeat
I'll sing the songs
And you keep the beat
The song "Oh Heart" by Jill Barber explains the struggles of a person's heart that is breaking down and affecting their ability to love. The "heart" in the song could be interpreted as a metaphor for a relationship or love interest; however, it seems that the lyrics focus more on the feelings that come with being in love, trying to stay true to commitment and loyalty, and managing the pain and struggles of love.
The song implies that the signals that the heart sends are now becoming weaker and less clear, and the singer struggles to carry on with the once-strong feelings of love. She remembers a time when things were easy and clear, and she didn't have to think about the consequences of her actions. However, now she feels like she's merely trying to pretend to be happy to avoid hurting anyone.
The chorus emphasizes the idea that the heart needs to take a backseat and rest, and the singer will take control of the relationship for a while. The lyric "I'll sing the songs and you keep the beat" symbolizes how the love will keep going as long as the singer can keep loving, while the heart will remain strong enough to keep steady pace.

JIll, never forget your roots. You're a class act. Why? Not many artists take the time to thank those involved by posting the credits as you have done. A lot of people "make" an artist. People like you show the world that Canadian talent is right up there with the best the world has to offer. I hope, in your long career, you will continue to use Canadian musicians and talent whenever possible. Advice? Keep those marketing gurus busy promoting you where it counts.

I mean, a car commercial? It took me at least ten years I know of to "discover" you. It's a sad comment to say I must thank Chrysler/Fiat for you but that's the truth of it. Mainstream (Canadian) radio needs their arses severely kicked. You're the real thing and I'm glad to add you to my rather large (massive) easy-listening collecftion. Thank you Jill, I plan to enjoy your uniqueness for some time to come.
