I'm waiting in our bed alone,
Dreaming of your embrace
Wishing you would come back home
But you don't call,
And you don't come,
And you don''t say,
And you don't stop
To say hi
On your way by
I'm feeling crazy
It is 5 a.m.
And I'm waiting by the phone again
This is not how it's 'sposed to be
You''re 'sposed to be here with me
But you're go'n now
You're just go'n now
You don't even think about the way I feel
You're just go'n now
You're just go'n now
When I know you should be right here
It's 6 o'clock in the morning
And I'm so tired of yawning
I am miserable and feeling blue
Cause all I really want is you
But you don't call,
And you don't come,
And you don't say,
That you miss me
And you don't stop
To say hi
On your way by
I'm feeling crazy
It's 7 o'clock in the a.m.
In 15 minutes this alarm will be ringing
At work,no one will feel my pain
It's a shame the way this whole thing changed
But you're go'n now
You're just go'n now
You don't think about the way I feel
You're just go'n now
You're just go'n now
When you know that you should be right here
But you don't call,
And you don't come,
And you don't say,
That you miss me
No,no,no,no
And you don't stop
To say hi
On your way by
This is crazy
Brrring'
Time to wake up,
And put on my strong face
And hope that no one will know
Jill Scott's "Insomnia" is a song that portrays the frustrations and struggles of being in a long-distance relationship. The song opens up with the singer in bed alone at 4 am, reminiscing about their lover's touch and wishing they were there. The lyrics use vivid imagery to convey the feelings of loneliness and desperation. The singer is yearning for their lover's attention, yet they don't call, come, or say that they miss them. The feeling of being ignored adds to the frustration that the singer is feeling at that moment, raising the idea that it could be a rocky patch in the relationship or an indication that something is amiss.
As the song progresses, it becomes evident that this is not a new feeling for the singer, as they confess to waiting by the phone till 5 am, and despairingly acknowledge that it is not how things should be. It highlights the challenges of trying to keep a relationship alive with distance in between. When the clock strikes 6 am, the singer is exhausted both mentally and physically, with nothing but a miserable feeling and a desire for their lover. The final verse, at 7 am, is the singer waking up to their alarm, putting on a brave face, and heading to work, only hoping that no one notices the pain they are feeling.
