Another Day
Jim Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My dusty feet have kicked the stones
Between a thousand railroad ties
From Boston down to New Orleans
I left the girls a cryin'
But I've still got some ramblin' in me
Got some miles left on my shoes
And before I take a job again
I'll have to be low-down
Cryin' the blues
So it's goodbye, baby, the whistle is a blowin'
If I miss the train I'll have to stay around
But as long as those railroad tracks go on unending
I'll be off to another day in another town

You say you'd like to ramble with me
This ain't no life for a girl
Too many people out to get you in a hobo's world
And it gets mighty cold when you're on the road
'Cause a boxcar never was a home
But you could join me if you want
I'm gettin' mighty tired of bein' alone
So it's goodbye, baby, the whistle is a blowin'
If we miss the train we'll have to stay around
But as long as those railroad tracks go on unending
We'll be off to another day in another town

But as long as those railroad tracks go on unending

We'll be off to another day in another town
We'll be off to another day in another town

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jim & Ingrid Croce's song Another Day Another Town describe the life of a rambler. The singer has traveled all over the country and left behind many girls. He sings about the freedom that comes with living a life on the road, but also acknowledges the difficulties and loneliness that come with it. He invites a girl to join him, but warns her of the dangers of living as a hobo. The lyrics convey a sense of restlessness and a desire to keep moving forward.

In the first verse, the singer talks about the many miles he has traveled and the places he has been. He has left behind girls in Boston and New Orleans, but he is not ready to settle down just yet. He still has some rambling left in him, and he wants to experience more of life on the road before he takes another job. He is willing to cry the blues and be low-down, but he knows that he will keep moving forward as long as the railroad tracks go on unending.

In the second verse, the singer invites a girl to join him. He acknowledges that it is a difficult life, with many dangers and hardships. Living in boxcars is not comfortable, and there are many people out to get you in a hobo's world. But he is tired of being alone, and he wants the companionship of a girl. He knows that they may miss the train and have to stay in one place for a while, but as long as the tracks keep going, they will always have another day in another town.
