Ruby
Jim Hall Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They say, Ruby you're like a dream
Not always what you seem
And though my heart may break when I awake
Let it be so
I only know, Ruby, it's you

They say, Ruby you're like a song
You don't know right from wrong
And in your eyes I see heart aches for me
But from the start, who stole my heart?
Ruby, it's you
I hear your voice and I must come to you
I have no choice what else can I do?

They say, Ruby you're like a flame
Into my life you came

And though I should beware
Still I don't care you thrill me so

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jim Hall's song "Ruby," describe the singer's infatuation with a woman named Ruby. The first stanza notes that even if Ruby is not entirely honest about who she is, momentary heartbreak is a small price to pay for the dream-like love he feels. In the second stanza, the singer compares Ruby to a song that does not know right from wrong but reveals in her eyes a shared pain. The singer wonders who stole his heart, and the answer is Ruby. The third stanza notes that though the singer should be cautious, his infatuation with Ruby proves too strong, and he cannot help but be thrilled by her.

The overall theme of the song is about the power of infatuation and how it can override what we know to be logical or rational. Despite being warned about her potential danger, the singer is drawn towards Ruby because of the joy she brings him. Even though he wavers between acknowledging the potential pain their situation may bring, he ultimately decides that being with Ruby is worth the risk.

Tracks 1 - 9 are songs from the Gershwin's Broadway musical Girl Crazy, from one show. Embraceable You, Bidin' My Time, But Not for Me and I Got Rhythm, four immortal standards just from one single stage production. When Ruby Braff, Hank Jones, Al Cohn (on tenor and clarinet), Jim Hall, Bob Haggart and Buzzy Drootin attended to this tuneful octet, it was the year 1958, 28 years after George & Ira wrote these gems. What's left 63 years after that. This Gambit Records CD and its companion, Ruby & Dave McKenna, are treasure troves of great songs and jazz at its storytelling best.

‘. . .are treasure troves of great songs and jazz at its storytelling best”. Beautifully and insightfully put. All the playing here, as musically nuanced and varied as it is, serves the story and emotion world of the songs.
