Prior to working with Neil Young and becoming a key contributor to the late 60's sound of Buffalo Springfield, Messina had a popular mid-60's Southern California surf-rock combo called Jim Messina & his Jesters who released an album on Audio Fidelity label.
Later on, he was co-founder along with ex-Buffalo Springfield guitarist Richie Furay of the country-rock band Poco. After a stint in Poco that lasted from from 1968-1970, he formed Loggins & Messina who had a long nine album run beginning in 1970 that was essentially exhausted by 1976. From 1979 to 1983 he released a trio of solo albums, Oasis (1979), Messina (1981), and One More Mile (1983).
Messina has continued since the 1980's to occasionally reunite with old partners like Richie Furay and Kenny Loggins for concerts that revisit past success, hosts "The Songwriters' Performance Workshop" wherein he leads 7-day intensive workshops for songwriters and singers. His 1996 solo release Watching The River Run (Revisited) featured the song Mexican Minutes later re-cut by hot country act Brooks & Dunn.
He currently has a 2009 release out entitled Mojito Moon available as a download at Amazon link: http://j.mp/b6Uf3m

Stay the Night
Jim Messina Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Oh, sweet woman, sure feels good to hold you tight
And I want you to know that I really want to be with you tonight.
Feelin' the warm fire and you cuddled up next to me
Lets me know that we feel the same you see.
(No, oh no, oh no)
Honey, stay the night
Please, won't you stay the night ?
(My friends they tell me not to get too close to you)
(You'll sing your love songs and you'll break my heart in two)
(I really feel that you will, oh baby).
I got love more than enough just waitin' for you
(But is it true ?)
Oh, Pauline, I just wanna give a little love to you.
(But I'd better go)
(No, oh no, oh no)
Honey, won't you please stay the night ?
Please, won't you stay the night ?
I hear the trashman throwin' them cans around
I hear the milkman that means daylight's comin' around.
(Oh, sweet Jimmy, it sure been nice just bein' your friend)
(I best be goin' now but maybe I'll come on back again).
(Now I'd better go)
(No, oh no, oh no)
Honey, won't you please stay the night ?
Please, won't you stay the night ?
(Whatcha do with my coat, honey, where's my shoes ?)
(I best be goin', there ain't no time to lose)
Now lay your head back down to rest
There ain't no need to go now, I know best.
(Jimmy, you're so bad, you're gonna make me late)
(Oh, I shoulda known better with a man like you)
(I'd never ever get away, oh no, I ain't gonna, never)
(This lady ain't never gonna get away, never gonna get away).
Ain't gonna let you go
Please, please, listen to me, baby
Please, please, listen to me, baby.
(I got to go now)
Just can't let you go
(I better go, I better go, I best be gettin' on now)
Stay
Please, please, listen to me, baby
Please, please, listen to me, baby.
(But I just can't stay the night)
(No, I just can't stay the night)
Ooo, it feels so right
Stay the night
Stay the night.
Jim Messina's song "Stay The Night" is a romantic love song about a man who is trying to convince his lover to stay the night with him. The lyrics reveal a deep affection and desire for her as he expresses his love and admiration. The singer is feeling the warmth of his lover cuddled up next to him, which affirms they both feel the same. In the latter part of the song, the singer begins to plead and woo his lady, promising to be there with more than enough love for her. However, the woman seems reluctant to stay the night with him, though the singer doesn't want to let her go.
The song's chorus, "Honey, stay the night. Please, won't you stay the night?" is a testament to the singer's persuasions, as he tries to convince his lover to spend the night with him. The lyrics also reveal some uncertainty about their relationship beyond this moment. The singer's friends have warned him not to get too close to the woman, as they fear she will break his heart in two. Despite the warning, he cannot help his desire and hope that they will be together. The song ends with the singer's final plea to stay the night and his lover's reluctance to do so.
