Curses Invocations
Jim Morrison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Curses, invocations
Weird bate-headed mongrels
I keep expecting one of you to rise

Large buxom, obese queens
Garden hogs and cunt veterans
Quaint cabbage saints
Shit hoarders and individualists
Drag strip officials

Tight lipped losers
And lustful fuck salesman
My militant dandies
All strange orders of monsters
Hot on the tail of the woodvine
We welcome you to our procession

Here come the comedians
Look at them smile
Watch them dance an Indian mile
Look at them gesture
How aplomb
So to gesture everyone

Words dissemble
Words be quick
Words resemble walking sticks
Plant them, they will grow
Watch them waver so

I'll always be a word man
Better then a bird man

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jim Morrison's song Curses Invocations are highly surrealistic and bizarre, and yet still convey a sense of anger and frustration. The song is essentially a list of various groups of people who are being cursed or addressed in some form or another. The song begins with Curses Invocations which sets the tone for the rest of the song. Morrison is calling upon some higher power to curse or invoke punishment upon the various groups he is addressing.

The first group addressed are the "weird bate-headed mongrels" and it is unclear exactly who or what Morrison is referring to here. The next group is a "Large buxom obese queen" which is perhaps a reference to an oppressive female figure of some sort. Other groups addressed include "Garden hogs and cunt veterans", "Quaint cabbage saints", "Shit hoarders and individualists", "Drag strip officials", "Tight lipped losers", "Lustful fuck salesman", and "My militant dandies." All of these groups are described in highly evocative language that is somewhat difficult to parse.

The second half of the song is more comprehensible in its meaning, as it describes the Comedians who are smiling and dancing despite the struggles and difficulties of life. Morrison is somewhat critical of their carefree attitudes and gestures, implying that they are simply putting on a show instead of truly grappling with the world around them. The final lines of the song, "I'll always be a word man / Better then a bird man," are somewhat enigmatic but can be seen as Morrison asserting his identity as a poet and wordsmith.
