Feast of Friends
Jim Morrison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wow, I'm sick of doubt
Live in the light of certain
South
Cruel bindings.
The servants have the power
Dog-men and their mean women
Pulling poor blankets over
Our sailors

I'm sick of dour faces
Staring at me from the TV
Tower, I want roses in
My garden bower; dig?
Royal babies, rubies
Must now replace aborted
Strangers in the mud
These mutants, blood-meal
For the plant that's plowed.

They are waiting to take us into
The severed garden
Do you know how pale and wanton thrillful
Comes death on a strange hour
Unannounced, unplanned for
Like a scaring over-friendly guest you've
Brought to bed
Death makes angels of us all
And gives us wings
Where we had shoulders
Smooth as raven's
Claws

No more money, no more fancy dress
This other kingdom seems by far the best
Until it's other jaw reveals incest
And loose obedience to a vegetable law.

I will not go

Prefer a Feast of Friends
To the Giant Family.

Overall Meaning

In "A Feast Of Friends," Jim Morrison expresses frustration with the state of the world and the prevalence of doubt and cruelty. He calls for a return to a simpler, more joyful existence, represented by images of gardens, babies, and roses. However, he acknowledges that even in this seemingly idyllic world, there are darker forces at play, such as incest and the "vegetable law" that dictates obedience to nature. Morrison ultimately rejects this world as well and opts for a "Feast of Friends," a celebration of companionship and camaraderie over material wealth and societal norms.

One possible interpretation of this song is that it reflects Morrison's disillusionment with the countercultural movement of the 1960s. Despite the promises of peace, love, and freedom, Morrison saw that these ideals were often compromised or corrupted by human frailty and systemic oppression. He recognizes that death is an inevitable part of life, but also sees it as a liberating force that can transform us into "angels" with newfound power and freedom.

Interestingly, "A Feast Of Friends" was one of the last songs Morrison recorded with The Doors, appearing on their final album, "An American Prayer," which was released in 1978, several years after Morrison's death. The album featured both new material and re-recordings of earlier Morrison poems and recordings, which were set to music by the surviving members of the band.

+Lissa Libutti i want 2 this jim morrison song and this scott weiland one ~ Lyrics:
Yeah, I could hide in the calm of the eye of the storm
And never blow away
Well, Im a young man with a knife to my back
Some things never seem to change

Nowhere to run to, nowhere to hide
Sing the song or keep it inside
Bought the farm, but the farmer done died
Sing that song, sing that song inside

I wish I could live in the dream
That I fly on the tarred & freathered wings
Well, Im losing a game of reality
Dice where the dealer never ever pays

Nowhere to run to, nowhere to hide
Sing the song or keep it inside
Bought the farm, but the farmer done died
Sing that song, sing that song inside

I wanna be as big as a mountain
I wanna fly as high as the sun
I wanna know what the rents like in heaven
I wanna know where the river goes

Yeah, I could hide in the calm of the eye of the storm
And never blow away
Well, Im a young man with a knife to my back
Some things never seen to change

Nowhere to run to, nowhere to hide
Sing the song or keep it inside
Bought the farm, but the farmer done died
Sing that song, sing that song inside

I wanna be as big as a mountain
I wanna fly as high as the sun
I wanna know what the rents like in heaven
I wanna know where the river goes

If I was stronger
I could be a mountain range
If night was longer
Could I escape the day?
If I was stronger
I could be a mountain range
If night was longer
Could I escape the day?

Nowhere to run to, nowhere to hide
Sing the song or keep it inside
Bought the farm, but the farmer done died
Sing that song, sing that song inside

I wanna be as big as a mountain
I wanna fly as high as the sun
I wanna know what the rents like in heaven
I wanna know where the river...
I wanna be as big as a mountain
I wanna fly as high as the sun
I wanna know what the rents like in heaven
I wanna know where the river goes
Where the river goes
Where the river goes
Where the river, yeah
Where the river
Where the river
Where the river
Where the river
Where the river goes
Where the river goes

Found this from Hannibal.

Katz: "Death makes angels of us all and gives us wings where we had shoulders smooth as raven's claws."

Zeller: "Robert Frost."

Will: "Jim Morrison."

The fact that this song is called A Feast of Friends is amazing, and really makes me admire the writers of Hannibal more.

Edit: From season 1 episode 5 "Coquilles"

This was the song I listened to the most when I was depressed. It was the song I listened to the most after someone died. It was the song I listened to the most when I was planning suicide. This song is the song of truth. In this song you will not find love and all the other lies we are told, you will only find the truth. Rip Jim, you're a legend, you were a legend.

I hear you ❤🎶🎶❤. I've listened to this song thousands and thousands of times. Especially after my first husband died. Lots of emotions in this song ❤🎶🎶🎶❣️💖💖

Love isn’t a lie, it’s more like a trip or a dream, the song ends but it’s real while it last’s and it did happen, even when it’s one sided. The stoics believed that the state of ones life relies on the quality of their own thoughts, I think it’s true to degree, loss is truly how we measure our love. Learn to love the lashings that life brings.

@rakikesitler0

@@gordianknot6867 i'd agree, when i wrote these lines i still had a feeling of hatred for my past. time passed, i soothed my mind, with various meditations and im fine right now.

The Doors literally have a song for everything. When you're feeling isolated, put on "When You're Strange." When you're awake at 4 Am, put on "End Of The Night." When you're going way over the speed limit on a highway, put on the live version of "Not To Touch The Earth." When you're causing down a city street late at night, put on "Ghost Song." And yes, when you're being carried out of your own funeral, make sure they play this song.

@leonie7536

evan is gay

@Wolfpaw754

Holy shit, I plan on having this song as one of my funeral songs, I also want the crystal ship as an ode to my mum, as my grandma just told them to play some bullshit generic funeral music...

@Munecamorena93

I thought I was the only one who felt like this. His artistry isn't talked about enough. His music literally helped me through my depression and awkward teen years. Forever indebted 🙏🏽 ❤❤

@gurrenmed5319

Bro the End of the Night is literally a 5 6 am song, Literally the best band

@luigiconder6113

And when you're taking your motorcycle out for the first time play "Break on Through to the Other Side"!
