Roadhouse Blues
Jim Morrison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ah keep your eyes on the road,
Your hands upon the wheel.
Keep your eyes on the road
Your hands upon the wheel.
Yeah, we're going to the roadhouse,
Gonna have a real good-time.

Yeah, the back of the roadhouse,
They've got some bungalows.
Yeah, the back of the roadhouse,
They've got some bungalows.

They dance for the people
Who like to go down slow.

Let it roll, baby, roll.
Let it roll, baby, roll.
Let it roll, baby, roll.
Let it roll, all night long.

Do it, Robby, do it!

You gotta roll, roll, roll,
You gotta thrill my soul, alright.
Roll, roll, roll, roll-a
Thrill my soul.

Ashen-Lady.
Ashen-Lady.
Give up your vows.
Give up your vows.
Save our city.
Save our city.
Ah, right now.

Well, I woke up this morning
And I got myself a beer.
Well, I woke up this morning
And I got myself a beer.

The future's uncertain
And the end is always near.

Let it roll, baby, roll.
Let it roll, baby, roll.

Let it roll, baby, roll.
Let it roll, all night long.

Overall Meaning

"Roadhouse Blues" by The Doors is a musical tale of travelling, adventure, danger, and the joys of experiencing all of them. The song begins with the singer advising his listeners to keep their eyes on the road and hands upon the wheel ("Ah keep your eyes on the road, Your hands upon the wheel") while on their way to a roadhouse to have a good time. The roadhouse mentioned in the song is an establishment where people go to unwind and have fun. At the back of the roadhouse, there are bungalows where people can rent and stay, and they have dancers for the people "who like to go down slow".

As the song continues, the lead singer asks the guitarist, Robby, to do it, and the chorus kicks back in again ("let it roll, baby, roll, let it roll all night long"). The next section features the singer calling an 'Ashen Lady' who must "give up your vows" and save "our city." The final verse parrots the opening verse, with the singer waking up, feeling uncertain about the future, and drinking beer while singing his blues away.

One of the fascinating things about "Roadhouse Blues" is that it wasn't intended to be on The Doors' 1970 album, "Morrison Hotel." The band was performing in front of an audience when they decided to play "Roadhouse Blues" impromptu. A member of the audience recorded the sound and sent it to the band's manager, who was impressed and thought it would fit perfectly on the album.

Another interesting fact about the song is that rock legend Bruce Springsteen played it during his 1992 Human Touch Tour, and the band members of The Doors were in the audience. Springsteen's guitarist, Nils Lofgren, had turned a jam between Springsteen and The Doors' guitarist, Robbie Krieger, into a full band performance of "Roadhouse Blues."

Several notable musicians, including Jeff Healey, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and ZZ Top have covered the song over the years.

This song does not sound like it's 50 years old. Still sounds very fresh, delightfully bluesy.
