I would love to see a video where you review THE PSYCHEDELIC SOLDIER by John Millius (the first draft of AN) and compare it to Jodorowsky’s DUNE (as DUNE inspired/jump started STAR WARS, ALIEN... and APOCALYPSE NOW)

I think I still have a PDF if you can’t find it anywhere.

Same thing with the early 80’s Giger inspired THE TOURIST script.

9:04 ahh.. that would be it. I wished you spoke of the very beginning, which rips a scene from Jod’s DUNE, flying through the universe... galaxy... solar system... Earth... and right down to the boat an old and grizzled Willard is sitting upon.

I believe this was eventually reworked into the opening title of the movie CONTACT

MarcosElMalo2 don’t get me wrong.. Jodorowsky is the god of pretension (just watch THE HOLY MOUNTAIN)

but .... there is still something that resonates with me. I have FANDO I LIS (which is... alright?) and EL TOPO, THE HOLY MOUNTAIN and THE RAINBOW THIEF on Blu-ray. I prefer ET over THM, as I’m a fan of spaghetti westerns (and it’s slightly less pretentious than THM). TRT is interesting, as you can tell Jodo mellowed with age, and was more subtle with transmuting his ideas with the characters and story.

It’s just a shame that he never got a chance to do something big with his ideas... then again, maybe it was for the best. If it wasn’t for him, STAR WARS, ALIEN, APOCALYPSE NOW and BLADE RUNNER wouldn’t exist.

I think he would be proud knowing that he planted the seed that, despite DUNE being buried, would grow into an orchard.

Oh no! I’m starting to sound like Jodorowsky!

Hey Tyler! You produce superior video essays, and I admire your deep analysis of cinema. That said . . .

What follows is criticism. Stop here if you don’t want it, cause I’m just a random guy with his random opinion. Someone whose opinion you can safely ignore. ;)

Anyway, I won’t say this essay is bad, just that it’s not up to the standards you’ve set with your other essays. It’s still better than 80% of the crap out there.

I’ll keep this note short: this essay lacks your usual coherence. It’s all over the place. 1) Some of the connections you make between Coppola and the Doors are trivial (or at least not explicated). You don’t explore the historical context of cinema that might have had a deep influence on Morrison and Coppola and that generation of filmmakers—I’m speaking of the offshoot called experimental film which was deeply influential at the time but mostly forgotten today. Kenneth Anger, early Buñuel & Dali, Maya Deren. Today we gloss over 60s counter-culture, but we don’t really understand how it formed and how it was influenced by the avant-garde.

2) You’ve gotten some fascinating topics in the essay that could use more development. Even if you have dealt with them elsewhere previously, you seem to be doing a second pass which piqued my interest, but then the essay sort of petered out.

Anyway, thank you for making this video. My disappointment is outweighed by my overall enthusiasm for your work. I’ve studied and worked in film for 37 years, and I learn from your essays, your analysis, and your insight. Please take these notes in that context.

Possibly the richest history of any movie, ever!

Imagine if they'd used only Doors songs for that movie. Holy fuck!

I'm hearing "Waiting for the sun" during the surfing scene lol

Anyone got any ideas?

I like how he opens the movie by presenting us with a protagonist who is unquestionably broken and insane... and somewhere along the way you realize that this insane drunk crying on the floor covered in his own blood is pretty much the most sane character in the movie.

Because that's the appropriate reaction to that environment.

@Nathan Jasper You'd be surprised. Humans are very good at adapting to and overcoming extremely stressful situations. It's one of our superpowers, its the reason our species has been so successful. If you ever found yourself in a situation like that, billions of years of evolution would take over, instinct would kick in, and you'd adapt very quickly. Your body and mind were literally built for survival. You would surprise yourself. The survival instinct is very strong.

well..other than "Chief"

"insane"? Based on what? Getting drunk and breaking a mirror?

The End was a perfect way to submerge the audience in a feeling that some soldiers must have felt in Vietnam; that the world was ending. This song is about a relationship ending, which can feel like the world is ending. One of those perfect film-meets-music moments.

One of the greatest openings to a film. Hypnotic, bleak, terrifying, brilliant. Everything after is not too bad either :)

I can't believe Lawrence Fishbourne was 14 when he started filming Apocalypse Now!

@vollsticks and can't believe Harvey Keitel was first choice to played Willard....amazes me every time
