I Won't Forget You
Jim Reeves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know that I won't forget you
For I've loved you too much for too long
Though you don't want me now
I'll still love you
Till the breath in my body is gone

That's how it is with me
And you'll always be
The only love I ever knew
I'll forget many things in my lifetime
But my darling, I won't forget you

That's how it is with me
And you'll always be
The only love I ever knew

I'll forget many things in my life time
But darling, I won't forget you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jim Reeves's song "I Won't Forget You" portray the essence of love and commitment. It highlights the concept of loving someone unconditionally, even when they don't love you back. The opening line, "I know that I won't forget you," establishes the song's theme that the singer will always remember and cherish his love for the woman addressed in the song.

The second line, "For I've loved you too much for too long," emphasizes the depth of the singer's love, which has lasted through time. The third line, "Though you don't want me now, I'll still love you," reveals that the woman has moved on or rejected the singer's love, but he still loves her with all his heart.

The chorus reflects the depth of the singer's love as it states that he will forget many things in his lifetime, but the woman addressed will not be one of them. The choice of words in the final line, "But my darling, I won't forget you," indicates that despite the pain or heartaches that the singer may face, his love will always endure, and he will cherish it forever.

My Grandfather used to listen to this song every day, especially after the passing of my grandmother. He would put on this tune from a stereo, sit outside on a chair with his tobacco pipe or a smoke in his hands, shedding tears. This song is his sweet remembrance of my grandmother. Now, it has become my sweet remembrance of my grandfather. I miss you, old man.

This was played at a funeral two days ago as they brought my good friend in. As a 63 year old ex army, I cried my heart out. Proud.
