Nobody
Jim Reeves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know they've been sayin'
That you broke every rule
That one day I'll lose you
'Cause I'm nobody's fool

I'll always have heartaches
As long as you're mine
But if I should lose you
I'd be lonely all time

So I'd rather be your fool
Than no fool at all
I'll just spend those lonely hours
Just hoping you'll call

There was no love before you
Only empty affairs
But I'm a fool, forever faithful
For the little you care

So I'd rather be your fool
Than no fool at all
I'll just spend those lonely hours
Just hoping you'll call

There was no love before you
Only empty affairs

But I'm a fool, forever faithful
For the little you care

Overall Meaning

The song "Nobody's Fool" by Jim Reeves is a classic country ballad that talks about a man's deep love and devotion for his partner, even though she may not feel the same way about him. The first verse sets the scene by acknowledging that there are rumors going around about the woman breaking rules and the potential of losing her, but the singer realizes that he is nobody's fool and might be considered foolish for sticking around. He acknowledges that he will have heartaches as long as she is his, but losing her would leave him lonely all the time. The chorus illustrates that he would rather be her fool than no fool at all, as being her fool brings him some level of happiness and fulfillment, even if it's not entirely reciprocated.

The second verse delves deeper into the singer's past, revealing that there was no love in his life before he met this woman. He had only been through empty affairs, but now he's considered a fool for being forever faithful to her, despite the little care she shows. The repetition of the chorus at the end of the song reinforces his unwavering commitment to this woman and his willingness to accept his role as her fool.

Overall, the lyrics of "Nobody's Fool" highlight the complex emotions that can exist in a one-sided relationship. The singer knows that he might be considered foolish for sticking around, but his love for this woman outweighs any possible judgment from others. He acknowledges that being with her will bring heartache but is prepared to face it if it means spending time with her.
