Silent Night
Jim Reeves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
'Round yon virgin mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Hallelujah
Christ the Savior, is born
Christ the Savior, is born

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace

Jesus, Lord, at thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth

Overall Meaning

The song "Silent Night" is a classic Christmas carol that was first performed in a small Austrian village on Christmas Eve in 1818. The song begins with the lines "Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright," which create a peaceful and serene mood. The next lines describe the scene of a mother and child, with the infant being referred to as "holy" and "tender". These lines evoke a sense of innocence and purity, as well as a connection to the religious aspect of Christmas.

The second verse of the song describes the reaction of the shepherds to the birth of Christ. The shepherds are said to "quake at the sight" of the heavenly glories that are streaming from the sky. This line suggests that the shepherds are both in awe of and a bit scared by the sudden and unexplained events that are occurring. However, the refrain of "Christ the Savior is born" reminds the listener that this momentous occasion is one of joy and celebration.

The final verse of the song focuses on Jesus himself, describing him as "love's pure light" with "radiant beams" emanating from his face. The line "with the dawn of redeeming grace" ties the birth of Christ to the idea of redemption and salvation, making this song not just a celebration of the holiday season, but also a reminder of the religious significance of this time of year.

I love this version. Jim was a devout Christian and when he sings he sings from the heart. The background humming choir sounds Angelic.

I've heard this song all my life, but NEVER sung as beautifully as this rendition by Gentleman Jim...it's stunning! Too much for words-- I'm thinking Jim sings this every Christmas for our Lord.

George Wilder

I agree with you..and if you want also another fabulous rendition try Karen Carpenter's version.
I play both of them one after the other and I'm by no means a religious person.

Claudia Heinowski

LOVE ths song irereguard of who sings it.

Betty Roos

This man's voice was made to sing God's praises.

Don't need Christmas to listen to this rendition. It's too beautiful to only play one time of the year. Spectacular... I bet Jim's serenading our Savior above.

Subhendu Raj

Angelic and sheer Divine. Hearing Sir Jim is an experience in itself .....
