This World Is Not My Home
Jim Reeves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This world is not my home I'm just a passing through
My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue
The angels beckon me from heaven's open door
And I can't feel at home in this world anymore
Oh lord you know I have no friend like you
If heaven's not my home then lord what will I do
The angels beckon me from heaven's open door
And I can't feel at home in this world anymore

I have a loving mother just over in gloryland
And I don't expect to stop until I shake her hand
She's waiting now for me in heaven's open door
And I can't feel at home in this world anymore
Oh lord you know I have no friend like you
If heaven's not my home Then lord what will I do

The angels beckon me From heaven's open door
And I can't feel at home In this world anymore

Just over in gloryland
We'll live eternally
The saints on every hand are shouting victory

Their songs of sweetest praise
Drift back from heaven's shore
And I can't feel at home In this world anymore

Oh lord, you know I have no friend like you
If heaven's not my home Then lord what will I do

The angels beckon me From heaven's open door
And I can't feel at home In this world anymore

Overall Meaning

The song "This World Is Not My Home" by Jim Reeves speaks about the Christian belief in the temporary nature of life on Earth and the promise of an eternal home in heaven. The song's lyrics express the idea that the singer is just passing through this world and that his true home is with God in heaven. He sings that his treasures are not to be found here on Earth, but rather are laid up beyond the blue, referring to the skies above.

The singer goes on to express how he can't feel at home in this earthly world any longer because the angels are beckoning him from heaven's open door. He speaks directly to God, telling Him that he has no friend like Him and asking what he would do if heaven were not his home. The song goes on to explain how the singer is looking forward to being reunited with his loved ones who have passed on, particularly his mother who is waiting for him just beyond the open door of heaven.

The final verse speaks of the singer's anticipation of living eternally in gloryland, surrounded by saints singing songs of sweetest praise. The repetition of the line, "And I can't feel at home in this world anymore" serves to emphasize the singer's longing for his true home in heaven.

Overall, the song expresses the Christian belief in the transitory nature of life on Earth and the hope of an eternal home in heaven. It is a poignant reminder of the ultimate destination for believers, while also acknowledging the bittersweet nature of leaving behind loved ones when the time comes to pass through heaven's open door.

This Song was uploaded by me right after my college days. My Life was dry to the core. I did nt get a job for an year. I had no hope for the future, I was a mediocre Christian that time. Though I know the ❤ of Christ, I did not cling on to him. One day when I was in the local train in Chennai (India) from Tambaram to Chetpet I was soo much tempted to jump of the train before I would decide on making the decision from no where 2 people came and they blocked my way. I don't remember them to this day. Just after returning home I felt it was God's interruption to save me and this was the first song came to my mind. This song was introduced to me by my childhood friend Moshe who is an ardent fan of Jim Reeves. Few weeks after that incident I uploaded this song to YouTube. And few months after that I grew more close to God also got my first big job in IBM and lot of things changed in my life and I am doing great by God's grace to this day. Thanks for sharing all of your experiences about this wonderful song in the comment section. May God bless all
