TRAIN
Jim Roll Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And you ain't no wind chime
Hanging on a breeze
You're a part of me
I don't want to see
From a long time back
And you ain't no story
Some poet laid down in rhyme
You're a precious child
But you make me wild
I guess it's just my time

Train
You can drink your wine
We'll get you next time around
Train
Hear that whistle moan
I'm going home
We both know that sound
And I never had such a peaceful rest
I went to make you mine
But when I reached to sign
You were gone again
There's a spirit's home
And there's a world of sin
We come and go
And damned if I don't know
Which world I left you in
Train
You can drink your wine
We'll get you next time around
Train
Hear that whistle moan
I'm going home
We both know that sound
So goodbye angel
And goodbye to your new face
I'm gonna miss your breath
It was cool like death
Some day I'll know you well
And kiss Him angel
Kiss your salt tears on His hand
But kiss Him free
And kiss Him once for me
I got a ride waiting
Train
You can drink your wine
We'll get you next time around
Train
Hear that whistle moan

I'm going home
We both know that sound

Overall Meaning

The song "Train" by Jim Roll is a melancholic ballad that explores the complexity of emotions in the aftermath of a lost love. The lyrics use poignant imagery to describe the relationship between the two lovers and the sense of impending loss that is palpable in the song. Roll opens with "And you ain't no wind chime, hanging on a breeze. You're a part of me I don't want to see, from a long time back." The wind chime metaphor sets the tone for the rest of the song, emphasizing that the love that was once vibrant and harmonious has become fragile and fleeting. The line "You're a precious child, but you make me wild, I guess it's just my time" speaks to the internal conflict the singer feels towards his lover. He knows the love he has for her is hard to let go of, but he is ready to move on.

The chorus of the song is a repeated line "Train, you can drink your wine, we'll get you next time around. Train, hear that whistle moan, I'm going home, we both know that sound." This line is significant, as it represents the sense of urgency and inevitability in the singer's journey. He recognizes that the train is a metaphor for life itself, and while he may not be able to save his love this time, he must continue on his journey and perhaps, in the future, they may meet again. The line "So goodbye angel and goodbye to your new face, I'm gonna miss your breath, it was cool like death" is heartbreaking, as Roll comes to terms with the fact that his love has moved on and found someone else. However, the ending of the song provides some comfort and hope, as Roll sings about kissing his love's salt tears on His hand, perhaps implying a sense of forgiveness and redemption.

Overall, "Train" is a powerful ballad that explores the complexities of lost love and the sense of yearning that comes when we must move on from something we once cherished.
