Jimmie's Chicken Shack has always produced an indie grunge/funk/jazz/ska sound similar: Incubus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime, etc. Mainstream popularity has fallen for Jimmie's Chicken Shack after a brief peak thanks to heavy MTV support for Do Right. After an extended hiatus, JCS reformed w/ a slightly modified lineup, maintaining a substantial fan following.
Released four studio albums; Pushing the Salmanilla Envelope (1997), Bring Your Own Stereo (1999), Re.Present (2004) and Fail On Cue (2008). Prominent singles include "High" and "Dropping Anchor" (both from Pushing...), "Do Right" (from Bring Your Own Stereo), and "Falling Out" (featuring Aaron Lewis of Staind) (from Re.present). A fourth studio album, Fail On Cue, was released in January 2008.

Sitting With The Dog
Jimmie's Chicken Shack Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And I will make no decision now
And these are the right words to say
Are these all the right words to say
Just get up on be on your way
But you're sitting with the dog
I follow a backwards god
Sitting with the dog I follow a backwards god
Sitting with the dog I follow a backwards god
I'm dumb and I'm ugly and I am uncreative
Dumb and ugly and uncreative
And these are the right words to say
Are these the right words to say
Just get up or get out of my way
But you're sitting with the dog
I follow a backwards god
Sitting with the dog I follow a backwards god
Sitting with the dog I follow a backwards god
Sitting with the dog I follow a backwards god
Here's to another breath
For the hole in the sky
For the hole in the sky
For the hole in the sky
Here's to another breath
And we're sitting with the dog
Sitting with the dog
Like a bump upside a log
Yeah, I'm sitting with a dog
The lyrics of "Sitting With The Dog" by Jimmie's Chicken Shack contain a deep sense of introspection, self-doubt and confusion. The opening lines of the song suggest that the singer is cautious about taking any steps or making any decisions, implying that they are unsure about their path in life. This hesitation leads them to question the words they are saying, wondering if they are the right ones to say.
The chorus, "But you're sitting with the dog, I follow a backwards god," seems to suggest that the person the singer is addressing is complacent and unambitious, metaphorically sitting with a dog rather than pursuing their goals in life. The singer, in contrast, feels lost and adrift, following a 'backwards god' that leads them in circles rather than towards their dreams. The repetition of this line throughout the song emphasizes this frustration and sense of stagnation.
The second verse of the song adds to this feeling of self-doubt, with the singer describing themselves as "dumb and ugly and uncreative." They wonder whether the words they are saying are the right ones, but the implication is that they don't really know what the right words would be. The final lines of the song, "Here's to another breath for the hole in the sky," are somewhat enigmatic, but suggest a sense of hopefulness and renewal amidst all the confusion and despair.
Overall, "Sitting With The Dog" seems to be a song about feeling lost and unsure, possibly in the face of complacency or stagnation from those around you. However, it also touches on the human capacity for resilience and the possibility of finding a way forward, even when everything seems uncertain.
