Blue Shadows
Jimmie Dale Gilmore Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blue Shadows
Devil moon over head
Blue Shadows
On a half-empty bed
Broken promises, loving words left unsaid
I remember them all
As Blue Shadows fall.
Is twilight more lonely than any other time?
It sure feels that way to me tonight.
The sound of your laughter
The joy of your smile
The sky on the day we met
I remember them all
As Blue Shadows fall.

Blue Shadows
Devil moon over head
Blue Shadows
On a half-empty bed
Broken promises, loving words left unsaid
I remember them all
As Blue Shadows fall.

Has sunset forever been like the end of time?
It sure seems that way to me tonight.
The misunderstandings,
The letters unsent,
The echoes of every goodbye
I remember them all
As Blue Shadows fall.

Blue Shadows
Devil moon over head
Blue Shadows
On a half-empty bed
Broken promises, loving words left unsaid
I remember them all
As Blue Shadows fall.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jimmie Dale Gilmore's "Blue Shadows" capture the melancholic mood of a person who is overwhelmed by past memories as they succumb to loneliness. The opening lines, "Devil moon over head, Blue Shadows, On a half-empty bed," paint a vivid picture of the somber atmosphere that surrounds the writer. The reference to the "Devil moon" could possibly suggest that the writer is going through a difficult phase in his life. As the song progresses, the writer reminisces about his past relationships, emphasizing the sadness of unfulfilled promises and words left unsaid. He misses his loved ones dearly, and his memories of happier times, such as the "sound of laughter" and "joy of a smile," only heightened the sadness he feels.

The line, "Has sunset forever been like the end of time?" suggests that in the writer's eyes, the end of a day can also represent the end of a chapter in one's life. The writer also mentions "Broken promises, loving words left unsaid," which highlights the regret he harbors about unspoken feelings and unrealized opportunities. The repetition of the line "I remember them all as Blue Shadows fall" evokes a sense of finality about the memories that will remain forever etched in his mind.

I read most of the first listed review. He must have bumped into a skunk when he was out for a jog. His assessment is old school. He was not at the time aligned with the music Jimmie Dale was introducing to the public.
