Away out on the Mountain
Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll pack my grip for a farewell trip
Kiss Susie Jane goodbye at the fountain
I'm going, said I, to the land of the sky
Away out on the mountain

Where the wild sheep grows and the buffalo lows
And the squirrels are so many you can't count them
Then I'll make love to some turtle dove
Way out on the mountain

When the north winds blow and we're gonna have snow
And the rain and the hail comes bouncing
I'll wrap myself in a grizzly bear coat
Away out on the mountain

Where the snakes are vile and the zebras? wild
And the beavers paddle on walking canes
Then I'll send my boots with a buffalo hide
Away out on the mountain

Where the whippoorwills sing me to sleep at night
And the eagle roosts on the rocks of spontan
I'll feast on the meat and the honey so sweet
Way out on the mountain

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jimmie Rodgers's "Away out on the Mountain" convey a sense of wandering and freedom, as the singer packs his things and leaves behind his familiar surroundings. The farewell trip he's embarking on alone, taking leave of Susie Jane as he goes off to explore the land of the sky. The land he refers to is where the wild animals roam free without fear or captivity, from buffalo, sheep, squirrels, to zebras, snakes, and beavers. The surroundings seem unstable, where snow, rain, and hail are expected, and he must wrap himself in a grizzly bear coat to protect himself.

The freedom of the open road allows him to fall in love with nature's creatures, expressing his longing to make love to a turtle dove. It seems that in this state of wilderness, anything is possible, and personal connections can grow beyond the societal norms. The night brings about more adventure, as the whippoorwills sing him to sleep, and the eagle roosts on the rocks of spontan. The land of the sky is evidently a realm where any dream can come to life, and the beauty of nature is celebrated and admired.

I am now 70. As a young boy my late dad played 78 record of this song often. He got the 78 from my Grandfather. I just love this song still. It was good to listen to

@Heliosphan33

Such a simple song about the most beautiful thing.

I've been listening to these songs since i watched the PBS special Country Music. I didn't realize how much i liked this music, i used to hear way back in the 60's and 70's, and i said in another comment, my oldest brother Mike is always picking on his. guitar and singing along. I don't see him only a few times a year. I guess i like this music, but more for sentimental reasons.
I'm due for a vacation, and need to go see my brother and the rest of my family. Thanks, Jimmie !
