Blue yodel no 1
Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Standing on the corner, I didn′t mean no harm
Along come the police, he took me by the arm
It was down in Memphis, corner of Beale and Main
He says "big boy, you'll have to tell me your name"

I said "you′ll find my name on the tail of my shirt
I'm a Tennessee hustler, I don't have to work"
Listen all you rounders, you better leave my women alone
′Cause I′ll take my special and run all you rounders home

Yodel-aaaa-iiiiii-adle-aaaaa

My good girl loves me, everybody knows
And she paid a hundred cash dollars just for me a suit of clothes
She come to the joint, a forty-four in each hand
She said "stand aside all you women and men
'Cause I′m looking for my man"

Yodel-aaaa-iiiiii-adle-aaaaa

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jimmie Rodgers’s Blue Yodel No 1 depict the encounter of the singer with the police on the corner of Beale and Main in Memphis. The singer stands innocently on the corner, but the police officer arrests him, and he has to reveal his name. The singer responds with a witty and cryptic answer: his name is on the tail of his shirt, and he is a “Tennessee hustler” who does not have to work. The singer then sings a warning to all the “rounders” to stay away from his women.

In the second verse, the singer boasts about the love of his significant other, who has spent a hundred dollars to buy him a suit. The singer’s lover is a force to be reckoned with, as she comes to the joint with two forty-four’s, shouting for everyone to make way for her man. Throughout the song, the singer interjects his signature yodeling, which adds to the overall upbeat and humorous tone of the song.

Overall, while the lyrics of Blue Yodel No 1 are simple, they convey a sense of humor and cleverness, characteristic of Jimmie Rodgers’s style. The song’s lively beat and yodeling make for an entertaining and catchy tune.

Considering that he passed away in 1933, the fact that video clips of Jimmie Rodgers in action have survived is nothing less than answered prayer. Love it!

@stationmanager9325

The clips of Jimmie were shot on film. Later dubbed to video tape in the late 1960,s.

@@stationmanager9325 I assume they must’ve recorded the audio for this at the same time they filmed it then synced it up right? I mean that would at least explain the women around him talking and everything being in sync with one another

I get so many weird looks when I tell people this is the kind of stuff I enjoy listening to since I’m only 25, but You can’t ever go wrong with a little bit of vintage country and blues.

@kevinkeener

That's awesome. If you want to hear a modern version of this kind of music, listen to Colter Wall. He's about your age, incidentally. A lot of his songs have this feel. He even references Blue Yodel No. 9 in his excellent song, 13 Silver Dollars. Other good Colter Wall songs that have this feel are Saskatchewan 1881, High and Mighty, Caroline, Summer Wages, too many to list. Enjoy.

@CNote_Bowling

@@kevinkeener I listen to him a lot, actually! I like The Devil Wears a Suit And Tie a lot walking to work!

when i was a kid - 80s/90s - i used to come home from school and listen to my mom's old records. since she was from Alabama a lot of them were country western. we didn't have cable tv for a long time and didn't get the internet until 1997 so there wasn't a whole lot to do. but when we did get the internet i listened to a lot of old country.
i was WAY out of step with the other kids my age. but as it turns out, they're all adults who are out of step with reality and a good old fashioned life. taking pictures of their food and duck faces, waiting for validation from strangers on their social media..... As for me, I'm still listening to old country western, taking care of my kids and my little farm. they listen to the oldies as well. though my oldest likes country, the youngest likes big band swing and jazz.
someone has to keep it alive lol so don't let anyone judge you. this is the real deal. old fashioned calloused-fingers talent.
