Jimmie Rodgers' Last Blue Yodel
Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, I love the women
And I love them all the same
I love the women
And I love them all the same
I love the women
But not enough to give them my name

These women make a fool
Out of me, Lord out of me

I take a girl to dinner
She hangs around my neck
When I take a girl to dinner, Lord
She hangs around my neck she pays the taxi
Also pays my check

These women make a fool
Out of me, Lord out of me

Well, she rubs my back with alcohol
Just to cure my cough
Well, she rubs my back with alcohol
Just to cure my cough
Well, I almost broke my back
Trying to lick the alcohol off

These women make a fool
Out of me, Lord out of me

Overall Meaning

In Jimmie Rodgers' song "Jimmie Rodgers' Last Blue Yodel," the lyrics portray a complex portrayal of the artist's relationship with women. At first glance, the singer claims to love women but not enough to commit to them by giving them his name. This could suggest that the singer enjoys the company of women but is hesitant to enter into a long-term commitment or marriage. This sentiment reflects a sense of detachment or fear of intimacy.

The lyrics go on to describe how these women make a fool out of the singer. This suggests that the singer feels manipulated or taken advantage of in his interactions with women. The line about taking a girl to dinner and her paying for his expenses could convey a sense of dissatisfaction with the dynamics of these relationships, highlighting the singer's feelings of emasculation or lack of agency.

Bought my first Jimmie Rodgers 78 rpm records in the salvation army record bin, Port Chester NY 1961. Also bought a recording of Vernon Dalhart singing Lucky Lindy. Somebody got rid of gold and I bought them all for a nickel a piece. Still have those records. Still play them..... It was Merle Haggards 2 record set. 'Same train, Different time' that put Jimmie back on top as the father of country music. Thank you, Merle and thank you, Jimmie. No body will ever put a song across like you guys did.
