Mississippi Moon
Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've heard all about the tune that's called the alabama moon
But the mississippi moon is just as bright
And I can't forget the time
When I asked you to be mine
But the moon was shining on that happy night
And you promised me then you would wed me in june
That's why I love the mississippi moon
Oh the mississippi moon is smiling down tonight
And love just seems to fill the air
Thee wipplewills are plitting in it's mellow light
And calling to be lovers there
Let us stroll once again down to dear ol lovers lane
Where nature seems to softly croon
All the hearts will be so light while we wander there tonight
Underneath that mississippi moon

Yodel

Many years have come and gone since I met you there alone
But tonight I'm thinking just as much of you
As I did when hand and hand
We wandered in that magic land
Where we gave our pledge to love each other true

Come and go back with me
To that spot in memory
Just to see again that mississippi moon

Oh the mississippi moon is smiling down tonight
And love just seems to fill the air
The wipplewills are plitting in it's mellow light
And calling to be lovers there

Let us stroll once again down to dear ol lovers lane
Where nature seems to softly croon
All the hearts will be so light while we wander there tonight
Underneath that mississippi moon

Yodel again

Overall Meaning

The song Mississippi Moon by Jimmie Rodgers starts off with the singer stating that he has heard about the tune called the Alabama moon, but for him, the Mississippi moon is just as bright. He talks about a happy night when he asked his love to be his and how she promised to marry him in June. The love they shared that night was blessed by the shining Mississippi moon, and that is why the singer loves it so much.

In the second stanza, the singer talks about how the Mississippi moon seems to be smiling down upon them right now, and love is in the air. He talks about the whippoorwills calling out to lovers to come and enjoy the night with them. The lovers stroll down to their favorite spot on Lovers Lane, where nature softly croons and their hearts feel light. They reminisce about their magical past and all the love that they had shared beneath the Mississippi moon.

In the final stanza, the singer talks about how many years have passed since that magical night, but he still thinks about her as much as he did back then. He beckons her to come with him to that spot in memory to see the Mississippi moon once again. They stroll down Lovers Lane once again, where nature softly croons and their hearts fill with love.

Overall, the song sings about the love shared between two people under the magical light of the Mississippi moon. The song touches upon nostalgia and the power of memories.

Note: This is not Rodgers' 1928 original recording, which featured only Rodgers and his guitar. The presence of two guitars (Fred Koone is the second) marks this as Rodgers' 1932 cover version. He's slightly awkward with the placement of the lyrics ("would wed me in June" and "seems to fill"), suggesting that he didn't remember the song as well as he had in the original recording.

Is the original recording still in existence?

Tennessee Walt

Absolutely. The best version is on the Bear Family Records supercollection "Jimmie Rodgers: The Singing Brakeman," but it's on a number of other collections as well.

He hadn´t completed the lyrics to his satisfaction as often happens
when yer making up a song or lyrics "hand out that stew, love each other true"
Good for a beginning but I would also have changed that too.

Was there a song or tune titled "Mississippi Moon" prior to 1928? In 1919, the 27th Division (New York Division that served in WW 1) Players placed a collection of tunes -- titled "Let's Beat It" -- maybe jazz -- in a publication called "Mississippi Moon." The sheet music cover for it is on E-bay and can be found by searching "World War 1 27th Division."

We have it in the Meridian Little Theatre with all his prior songs on record.
