He sold them but did not pay back the music stores which supplied the guitars. Grant said that the band broke up because they did not agree with that. The Union, a collaborative album between Elton John and Leon Russell, featured a song entitled "Jimmie Rodgers' Dream", which was a tribute to Rodgers.

Rodgers was taught music by his mother, learned to play the piano and guitar, and joined a band called "The Melodies" started by violinist Phil Clark, while he served in the United States Air Force in Korea.

Jimmie Rodgers had not only one of the purest, most beautiful voices in music, he was the bravest rebel in modern music, defying the worst elements in society. In revenge, they literally crushed his skull. He had to learn to walk again, talk again, suppress Grand Mal seizures, and rebuild the life they absolutely shattered. As the father of folk-rock, a pioneering figure in rock 'n roll, and a great singer-songwriter, Jimmie Rodgers deserves to be in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame.
